In some cases you may find it leaves a gap at the stem but, if so, you can go to Ace Hardware and find a chrome flange for 1 1/2 inch pipe, #41788, that looks really nice at the wall to add about 3/8 inch length. For the price it is a good deal and adds nice class. The look is wonderful and a nice contrast to most plastic Pfister type handles. I fail to understand the complaints as all are easily remedied and I have yet to see Pfister type handles that look better. The issues with the screws being loose plagues all Pfister style handles, this can be very easily remedied by sparingly applying a thread-locking compound such as locktite. The porcelain is difficult to damage, as I dropped one of the handles 4 feet on to marble tile with no scratching! The only catch to installation is you will need a valve seat wrench which many people don't have in their home repair kits, and honestly it is for most people a one time use tool and best borrowed. Wolverine PST156 Tapered Faucet Seat Wrench I should say that replacing the valve seat is recommended but if they are in good working order, probably not necessary.
