The Bible for genealogical research for Scottish families.
I love this book. It is indispensable for research for anyone looking up his Scottish genealogy. It is the complete version not the abbreviated David Dobson version It is worth the price.

Excellent Resource
Outstanding reference on Scottish surnames. Earliest known appearances, changes through time, history, cross references to other alternative spellings. Is it going to tell you how it got to you today? No. But the notes are extremely thorough and point you in the directions to research for more detail. In a country with so many โethnicitiesโ and families battling over power and turf, surname changes were common since surnames began. No other book will give you the places to start sorting them.

Valuable resource in Scottish Genealogy research.
I would consider this the most important book for Scottish Genealogy research. In the 100 years or so since its release, not a single better tome of information even comes close. While it's not a cheap purchase, the information in side is invaluable, particularly if you have numerous family name searches.Once your tree is complete, consider donating the book to your local genealogy center so that others can reap the benefits of this solidly researched book.

Surnames of Scotland--the title says it all. The ultimate resource for such research.
The ultimate resource when searching for information on Scottish (and also Irish) surnames. Originally written by Dr. George F Black, PhD, chief historian for the New York Public Library in 1946. Gives the Gaelic origin of most names and gives all currently known variants of that name. My mother's Scottish family name has 30+ different spellings and all are listed. Every few years the book is updated as more information becomes available. In many cases this book will advise where in Scotland or Ireland the name originates. It also lists many ancestors of each name.

Cleared up a mystery
The book cleared up questions about how names changed when immigrants entered the U.S., according to pronunciation and what the clerk believed he or she heard. Like McRae, is related to McCra, McRa, etc.

Lots of data not much depth on the surname I was interested in
Lots of work went into this but it really didnโt go into depth on any of the surnames. However that may not have been the goal of the author. Probably need to go somewhere else for more information on specific surnames

Surnames of Scotland : Their Origin, Meaning and History
Very good book for surnames. Most are two pages which is rather brief but good info to start with in further researching the name. Although it could be more in-depth, it is worth the purchase. As with all books, look for other sources as this was a used book it is well worth the cheaper price. I have found this a value in genealogy research as some books are too expensive for their content.

Great resource
I recommend looking through the name glossary for different ways of spelling your last name as there is more info available if you do that.I wish there was even more info available but per all the information online, this book is the best and most Thorough investigation and resource for Scottish clans.
