Second in the series, as fun as the first
It's a rollicker and a frolicker, you little nibbleheads. Polly and Friday and Alan Taylor and Jake the Dog are always saving the Town of Lamonic Bibber from evil Mr. Gum and Billy William the Third. Shabba me whiskers, but this is exciting stuff. It's silly, but not dumb. It's inventive, but not obscure. It's shrewd, but not condescending. It's dry, but not with that odd Dahl aftertaste. And for my little ones, it has been engaging, amusing, and very popular. They can be avant-garde before they're kindergarde. So, if you've been waiting for post-modern to reach pre-school, here it is.

brilliant!!
My 8 year old son thought books were 'boring' but after we took his Nintendo away (as a punishment) and replaced it with books for a few weeks he is hooked on Mr. Gum and I have had to order the whole series - which I don't mind at all! The humour in these is just perfect for a boy his age and there are plenty of laugh out loud moments. I have to say it is a pleasure to see him reading a book instead of plugged into technology!

Wacky . . .
Kind of a wacky story with pretty much every character light years away from normal. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill kid's book. It held my 5-year old's attention and made him laugh pretty hard in places even though he's a little young for it and didn't quite get everything that was going on. I think you can kind of get a good sense of what it will be like by looking at the first couple of pages. Overall I'd recommend, but most certainly won't be to everyone's taste!

same as above
My two great-grandchildren who are 9 and 7 love these books as well as the Mr. Gum series. They eagerly wait the books and practically devour them very quickly

I like the gum books
These are perfect for reluctant readers. They don't take long to read but they are a lot of fun. mr Gum always gets what is coming to him.

check amazon UK for reviews - looks as good as the first
A tip for others like me: I loved the first Mr. Gum book but I couldn't find any reviews of the following books in the series to see if they're worth ordering. But since it's British, there ARE reviews on Amazon UK! Check here:http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gum-Biscuit-Billionaire-Andy-Stanton/dp/1405228156Based on those, I feel confident to buy this next one, or maybe all of them. Only the British adults who are probably as open minded as a bag of sticks gave it bad reviews, but even then they admitted that kids love them. The truth is a lemon meringue!

not quite as funny as #1
My grandchildren loved the first Mr. Gum book. The second was also good but not quite as funny.

Difficult to choose between the two audiobook versions: they're both good
Right then. This is Book 2 of the Mr Gum series, a brilliantly original set of children's books that manage to deconstruct themselves as they go in a way that children (well, my children anyway) find totally hilarious. If you haven't already read (or listened to) Book 1, it's worth reading (or listening to) first. There are two audiobook versions of Book 2, The Biscuit Billionaire: the original, read by the author, Andy Stanton, and this new one read by Kate Winslet. But which is better?Well, Stanton's original version benefits from some appropriate sound effects, whereas Winslet's version relies on her virtuosity to create her own sound effects. Stanton's version sounds is less polished, and a good deal more manic; Winslet's version has better characterisations and a good range of accents, but she does get a bit shrill at one point in the middle. My son far prefers Stanton's version of the Famous and Utterly Terrifying Robbers' Song, complete with sound effects; Winslet's version is not quite as gorgeously silly. The answer is not at all clear-cut: both audiobook versions are very good, and it's really down to whether you prefer your stories read by someone who sounds like a manic English teacher who doesn't sound too professional but knows the books inside out because he wrote them and who is very funny to listen to, or by a storyteller with a wider range of voices, who can make the story come to life rather better. Whichever you choose, it probaly makes sense to stick to one or the other narrator for all the books, so here are the audiobook options for the first three Mr Gum books:Book 1: Your a Bad Man, Mr Gum (Andy Stanton version / Kate Winslet version)Book 2: Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire (Andy Stanton version / Kate Winslet version)Book 3: Mr Gum and the Goblins (Andy Stanton version / Kate Winslet version)But the good news is, they're both good versions, so you can't really go wrong.
