Beautifully collected accounts
My family is descendants from both sides of this war, so reading first hand accounts from family is enlightening. We are lucky to have a book put together so well for future generations to learn from. Must read.

This book is fascinating through and through, partly because it is the story of my own family and partly because it offers a very different perspective of the war- from the native view point. My several-greats-back grandfather was Joseph Coursolle and I am also related to a number of the other story tellers in this book. So many of the stories in this book are very similar to tales I heard over the years from my elders. I wish I had known about this book when I was in college and wrote a thesis about the war!

Excellent and Just as Described
I recommend this book for what it purports to be, testimony from the Dakota that were actually there. For once the stories are not filtered through white authors or reporters and their words are brought to life again, for better or worse. It does not sugar coat what happened but explains how it did. Excellent reference source. The only way to get into the mind of the American Indian is to listen to what THEY have to say. This book does just that with some excellent side information to set the scene.

Very Informative book
Initially I purchased this book for a required reading in a college course. I must admit I was not expecting much from it, but it turned out to be very informative and interesting. I would recommend it to any one interested in Native American History.

Excellent Book!
Excellent! A fresh perspective on the horrors of that ill-fated Dakota uprising. Reminding us that not only are there at least two sides to any story, there are often far more than a mere two. A VERY solid five stars!
