Check it is really the starter before you buy
I saw several reviews giving this product a poor rating that might not necessarily be fair. Beware it is common for the Briggs engines to have the "compression relief camshaft" fail, which gives systems of a bad starter or battery. Don't be like me - before you replace the starter, remove the spark plug and see if the engine will turn over. If it does, the starter is fine and you need a new camshaft.Replacing the camshaft is a moderate repair that most DYIers should be able to do. There are lots of youtube videos explaining the process.

Want to save on a starter and then have to buy a new $250 flywheel? Great, then get this.
Part looks identical to original and is simple to install. However, this is Chinese made junk and looks are usually deceiving. The gear should ride up the shaft on a spring to engage with the flywheel in order to turn it (which in turn starts your engine). This one, however, doesn't do that. Instead, the entire shaft spins up causing the gear to crash into the flywheel as it engages with it...this causes the gear to sit higher than it should and makes the retraction of the gear a great example of what happens when the metal teeth on two cogs collide rather than interlace with each other.I just put a brand new $250 flywheel on last week. Thanks to this COMPLETELY INFERIOR product, I now have damaged teeth on a brand new flywheel. I don't like paying for the ridiculously overpriced Briggs replacement parts any more than the next person. So, if you're like me and see this starter motor and think "awesome, this is about a third of the Briggs price," then let me strongly encourage you to rethink this because the reality is that a starter motor is $90-$100 and a flywheel is $175-$275...so let's just say $95 and $225 to make it simple. Here's what you should be thinking based on reality..."wow, this is about a third of the Briggs price so if I buy it then I'll only have to spend another $225 to replace the flywheel and then get another starter that works for $95 more. As an added bonus, I'll get some practice installing two starters and I'll get to buy a puller to get the flywheel off (maybe a torque wrench too in order to put the new one on.)"That $30 great deal for a starter will end up costing you $315 plus the cost of a few speciality tools, if you don't already have them....and your riding mower will be out of commission for an extra week or two.Still think it's a great deal???? Then buy it. Otherwise, save yourself the time, headache and expense and buy the Briggs.

Good replacement starter
This was a good replacement starter but the mount bracket was canted slightly so the starter wasn’t Sitting perpendicular to the flywheel. Removing the bracket and using a hammer and vise fixed the problem.

Excellent product and price
First time for me to replace a starter on my John Deere LA 115 riding mower. While not easy, it was a learning process to get the old one off. Removing the cowling was the most challenging step. After that, removing the old starter was easy...once I bought a size 30 Torx bit. Warning: be sure to remove solenoid wire carefully and tape end with electrical tape to keep is from touching the chassis. Remove negative battery connection too. It took me several days to get this done - I'm an amateur small engine repairer. Upside is I probably saved about $200 by doing it myself. You can do it, too!

Saved $$$$!
Saved myself $50 just on the starter alone and I installed it myself and saved another $100. I’m not a mechanic and had never tackled this job before but I took my time, thought out each step along with photos of what screws went where and what do you know, my mower is starting like a champ.

Perfect fit, but failed after two uses.
Fit perfect, no installation problems at all. But, it failed after only two times cutting the grass. The return window has closed. Now I get to see how the Asurion Protection Plan works, ha.

It works
Difficult to onstall unless you can figure out how to disassemble half the mower. Hard to tighten properly then vibrated loose after 1 use. It works but it is a pain. Do yourself a favor and hire a Professional to fix your mower/tractor.

Works great for my Scotts 1742 lawn tractor
This starter starts my nearly 20 year old Scotts 1742 lawn tractor right up like its new and works better than the one I had picked up at my local John Deere authorized dealer. The dealer had given me one with more teeth that were made out of nylon/plastic and you could see where they were getting jammed in to the flywheel when I took it off. Thats why I decided to try this starter and not go back to the dealer.
