It is beautifully written, clearly organized, humorous, with rich anecdotes woven in to bring this whole and often uncomfortable subject understandable and down to earth. For me, however, the scope of the book is much larger and draws upon the spirituality, ideas, and messages of today's luminaries and visionaries as some of the tools to use on the road to recovery.Without writing a tome, on many levels I can honestly say that Paul nailed it with "Alcohol Is Sh!t! There were so many pearls of wisdom, but the one that blew me away: "There is nothing more important to true growth than realizing that you are not the voice in your head--you are the one who hears it.' (Michael Singer). This one concept could saves millions of folks untold anguish! It is brilliant, far-reaching, and true (in my book).Paul guides the readers through many methods and techniques that have proven to aid people on the road to recovery. Paul even poses the question: what is does recovery mean, what is actually recovered? His answer: in a nutshell, recovering the person he/she was meant to be all along. Alcohol is very seductive and clever and can lie to us in our own voice, but, to quote here: "The alcohol isn't to blame for the countless failed promises we make ourselves. Alcohol isn't the quandary. It's the telegram. It's a signpost. It's a nudge. It's a pigeon carrying the most important message you'll ever receive. The problem is thinking (sic back to the Singer quote), and, for the most part, this is the core addiction."The key for me was: it's important to look at giving up alcohol with great joy and excitement, not as a lifelong sentence of deprivation. What one gains from ditching the booze far outweighs what one perceives as losing. A new day will dawn, and for many who've had the great opportunity to find and read this book, will look at this new dawn, any dawn for that matter: 1/ sober, 2/ clear-headed , 3/ with excitement, 4/ and chomping at the bit for what the day will offer. There are so many goodies in store :-)And to conclude, Paul writes: "It's of paramount importance we view this entire journey for what it actually is--an opportunity and not a sacrifice...With this mindset, you'll start to look at things in a more advantageous fashion...Deep inside, your heart and soul already know that ditching the booze is an opportunity of a lifetime, but it can some time for the mind to get to speed, so be patient."I'm very grateful that this book came across my radar. I had already purchased This Naked Mind by Annie Grace and found it very helpful on my sober Journey and Amazon recommended this. I decided to purchase it and am so thankful I did. I didn't know about the Recovery Elevator podcasts or the Cafe RE private Facebook groups that Paul created before I bought this. I actually found out about them in another Facebook sobriety group I belong to. Someone in that group recommend them both and I looked into it. I joined the Cafe RE groups and found the support I had been craving, the non-judgmental community of people like me that were struggling and thriving with ditching the booze. I signed up for the 6 week ditching the booze course that Cafe RE does for it's members, started listening to the podcast and reading this book.I really enjoyed reading this book, it gives a good understanding about "the why" of addiction, what our minds are trained to do and how to start healing. It is written in a way to provide the information without being to technical and with a good amount of humor thrown in to keep it light. The saddle up questions are really thought provoking and relevant to each chapter/section. Paul keeps it real, not only in this book but in his podcasts and in the groups, and is in this to help others not for his own ego.As part of the ditch the booze course we had some breakout rooms during a zoom meeting and the questions we were discussing were about our self care routines, Paul happened to be in the 5 person breakout group I was in and I was talking about how reading a couple chapters of Alcohol is Sh!t was part of my morning routine lol. I was like oh yeah, I'm reading your book Paul, and enjoying it very much! I am excited to see what Paul does next in his Journey.Reading this book along with joining the Cafe RE community have made sobriety obtainable, exciting, and feel like less of an obstacle in my life. There are stories inside and suggestions for many different ways to find freedom from alcohol (if you struggle with it). In my opinion author looks at all types of drinking behavior (from minimal or moderate to severe) in this book and doesn't seem to stereotype. Each chapter ends with a "saddle up" section which is a list of questions designed to help you explore your own thoughts, habits, and perceptions. This could be used as a workbook or tool with which to journal. Some topics touched on for potential help with addiction include pharmaceuticals, plant based medicine, meditation, connection with others, etc.I purchased the audio version. At times, I was a little confused about the direction of book and thought I heard some repetition. I was unsure of the ending.
