It's like the Hi-Point of radios!
Pretty happy with this little radio, for the price. Now I obviously wouldn't do something as brash as transmitting without a HAM loicense (that's just crazy innit), but I am happy with what I paid for. I can also say that, given the correct adapters (all sourcable from Amazon), that this unit will function with a nato-type comms headset such peltors. I had to take apart a PTT, resolder it to a kenwood connector and switch the microphone and speaker pinouts (like, maybe 10 minutes of work) to mate with military comms as opposed to a civilian-style headset. The result is an exceptional, waterproof, impedance-matched (surprisingly) commo kit for like 60ish bucks (not including headset). Could easily run two nets this way, given the radios take up a VERY small footprint. Headset/PTT connector at the radio is bombproof, but it is secured with a small brass screw so make of that what you will. Battery life is about what you'd expect, and I've had trouble finding an extended battery that fits this particular model (it has a different battery connection than, say, a 5r). My main complaint is that there's no way (that I know of) to lock the keypad, so if you're bumping into stuff or larping way too hard, you may inadvertently switch off your net. An easy solution is to just macgyver yourself a plastic keypad cover, which works well enough. Maybe I'm just an idiot and need to RTFM, who knows. Also, it has a bit of ruggedizing plastic shielding the antenna threads, which is great, but also gets in the way of putting a larger-diameter antenna connector base on those threads. No biggie, though - the stock antenna works fine for short-range communications.

Best radio ever
I've had a couple of UV9R Plus radios for a few years now, and man are these things reliable. They feel hefty in the hand, and I know they can handle being dropped a few times without even a scratch. The ease of programing them on the fly is a uniquely helpful feature. They can transmit a strong signal, and the antenna it comes with is great at picking up distant signals. I bought 4 more for my friends this year as a gift. They charge fast, and have an amazing battery life. If you have the usb programming cable, it is compatible with the Chirp software so you can quickly clone many radios. I use them for FRS, GMRS, MURS, and monitoring police/fire frequencies. Overall a great little radio!

Baofeng UV-9R Plus, A Tough, waterproof radio on a budget!
I was looking for a budget friendly, waterproof, Dual Band, Amateur Radio, I discovered the Baofeng UV-9R Plus. I found a few videos on YouTube, that showed some waterproof tests, that looked good. After more research I decided to try out the Baofeng, UV-9R Plus. The radio is really a little work horse! PROS: Built very durably (I have dropped it several times without damage, due to the belt clip!) It has a waterproof battery seal, seals on the antenna, power knob, and microphone connector, and inside the main housing. The stock antenna actually works well (compared to my upgraded Extra Power Antenna). This radio comes with a 2500 mAh battery, that lasts about a week per charge. The radio is easily manually programmed, but is very easily programmed with a Free CHIRP PROGRAM, which does have the UV-9R listed now! Other features are similar to the Baofeng radios. The radio transmits and receives very well. I have talked on the OEM antenna about 25 miles away to a local repeater. CONS: The Belt Clip is small and spins loose and falls off your belt. I have since upgraded the belt clip, and it works much better! The radio does NOT come with a programming cable. (which are available online) The waterproof cover for the microphone, must be removed with a small screw driver, in order to attach the programming cable. This is not a major issue, but would be easier with a thumb screw. All in all, I like it. I liked it so much I bought a second unit, since it was just a little more money than the spare battery, and now I have a backup, backup radio! The waterproof feature is very nice, since I live in a high humidity environment, and use it outdoors on a daily basis. For the money, you can not go wrong! P.S.: The Power is stated at 8 Watts, but is probably 5 Watts on High Power, 3 watts on Med., and 1 Watt on Low. (But I have not tested that!) AND when ordering through Amazon, be sure that this radio is currently in stock & being shipped directly from a USA - Amazon warehouse, otherwise it may take months to get it shipped from China!

Good Sturdy Dual-Band (2m, 70cm) Radio
Purchased this because UV-5R's are not water resistant NOR impact proof. We program and takes these on hikes along the Appalachian Trail. The UV-9R's proved more water resistant and impact resistant than the UV-5R radios. Our only disappointment was that the accessories (hand mics, charging cradle, programming cable) were not compatible with the UV-5R accessories - so you need to figure that into the overall purchase. These aren't as reliable as our Yaesu FT-60 and 95s but are significantly cheaper and I don't hesitate to allow my friends to use them to maintain contact during the longer hikes. Also recommend replacing the antenna - the BaoFeng antennas aren't that good.

Battery comes loose, bad rx and tx.
Ok. Two radios now. One, the battery popped in and out, causing reboots. Both radios couldnt rx at all. I am on ski patrol, so have many other radios to compare against. My uv 5r2 is way better, and has held up to the rain. I cant even find this unit on the baofeng site, so i dont even know if it is a real baofeng product.

Great radios!
We love these radios. My daughter loves to ride her horse miles away from home and to places where phones don't get signal, these radios are perfect for this. They don't have a super long range here where we live, but they can go about 4 miles. We live where there are tall hills and lots of trees so i'm impressed by their range.
