"Origin of the Hobgoblin" fills with action, suspense, romance dilemma & a prelude to "Secret Wars".
"Origin of the Hobgoblin" is an action-packed collection that features Spider-Man's first encounter with the Hobgoblin. Of course, "Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man" #43, 47 & 48 had Spider-Man deals with the Prowler & a new villainess called Belladonna. Then in "The Amazing Spider-Man #238-239", Hobgoblin finally makes his introduction as Spider-Man's deadliest enemy. Of course in "The Amazing Spider-Man #244-245" & "Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #85", Spider-Man is still romantically involved with the Black Cat while he still battling the Hobgoblin & dropping out of graduate school. Mary Jane bumps back into Peter Parker's life as Harry Osborn & his wife Liz Allen reveals they're going to have a baby. In "The Amazing Spider-Man #249-251", Spider-Man temporarily lost his spider-sense while battling the Hobgoblin and one of the most shocking moment, the Kingpin saves Spider-Man from the Hobgoblin's fatal blow. Luckily, Spider-Man's spider-sense came back to him just in time for the final confrontation with the Hobgoblin. And of course, J. Jonah Jameson step down as the Daily Bugle's editor-in-chief after he confess in public that he had a hand of turning Mac Gargan into the villainous Scorpion. The story ends when Spider-Man disappears into the alien structure in Central Park leading to the Marvel Super Heroes' crossover event "Secret Wars".This is a great classic for all die hard Spider-Man fans.

One of the Best Spider-man Stories
This Is one of the greatest Spider-man sagas ever written and probably should be considered one of the best mystery stories in comic book history.Roger Stern, with an assist by Bill Mantlo and Tom DeFalco (who later took over the Amazing Spider-man title from Stern) weave a tale of mystery and corporate intrigue unlike anything comics had ever seen before. An angry bitter mystery man is handed the keys to the Goblin kingdom and rather than resurrect the Green Goblin again, he creates a new identity, The Hobgoblin. This Goblin is stronger and more driven for profit and greed than Norman Osborn and incredibly cunning and dangerous. The mystery is not resolved at the end of this story, but was later solved by Roger Stern in another story called The Hobgoblin Lives.Definitely worth a purchase!

The earliest days of one of Spider-Man's most underrated foes
A strange book that delves into the history of one of Marvel's most underappreciated villains, the Hobgoblin. The collection is a bit odd because the first few stories would make no sense to anyone not familiar with the original Hobgoblin's secret origin. But the tale does an excellent job of setting up the nefarious criminal figure. In some ways a legacy of the Green Goblin, creator Roger Stern sets up a character with a strong mystery around him. These initial tales cover Stern's run with the character before Tom DeFalco and James Owsley continue the run of the character, but these tales are a strong reason I believe Hobgoblin is arguably one of the most under-utilized character in the Marvel Universe.

Spider-man done right
Many Spider-man fans, especially of a certain generation, rate the Roger Stern era of Spider-man as one of the peaks in the character's history. I didn't start reading comic books until around 1990, so I missed these stories when they were first published. However, upon reading this book, I can see why people have fond memories of these comics. Even though I hadn't read it before, somehow it felt like the epitome of the 'classic Spider-man' that all Spider-man fans have in their head. He battles super-villains, makes witty self-deprecating remarks, and has relationship melodrama, all in perfect proportion. The story here is quite good, though also incomplete. It has a handful of issues before the Hobgoblin comes into existence, and though in the context of the book, they're clearly meant to show the background of Roderick Kingsley who would become the Hobgoblin, it's never actually revealed explicitly in this book that Kingsley is the Hobgoblin. Spider-man is still stumped at the end. It also, because of the nature of story arcs and cliffhangers in the 80s, has an odd ending as the storyline wraps up, but the final few pages of the book are meant to tease Secret Wars, a giant crossover that happened at Marvel right afterwards. There are also a bunch of gaps, as Roger Stern had the Hobgoblin bounce in and out of Spider-man's life for a while, and this only collects those issues and not the in-between ones (like the much-loved Kid Who Collects Spider-man). So if you want a more complete collection of this classic iteration of Spider-man, you may want to go for the Roger Stern Spider-man omnibus. As for me, I'm glad I went cheaper. These issues are great fun, but not terribly deep. The characters act logically and naturally in character, the writing is clear and sharp, and the art, while not groundbreaking, is very solid. It doesn't do anything with superheroes that hasn't been done before or since, it just does it really well. It's a satisfying jaunt in the world of Spider-man.

Great read-the issues about the Hobgoblin.
The book starts off with a story about the foe belladonna which has nothing to do with Hobgoblin. Then there is the Hobgoblin saga which is superior in story and art. But it wasn't enough to fill out the book.

The perfect introduction to my favorite Green Goblin knockoff
I’ve always loved Hobgoblin because of the 90’s cartoon, and I wish he would get more respect. If you’re a fan of the character, or even just wanna learn more about the green goblin but he’s orange, I recommend starting here!

Great stories and artwork from Marvel's second Marvel Age
Great stories and artwork from Marvel's second Marvel Age, the 80's. NYC is the backdrop and watching the rise of one of Spider's coolest members of his rogues gallery is good fun.

Hadnt read amazing spiderman in a while as I am following the ultimate run at the moment. But when I started reading the stories of hobgoblin's origin I couldn't put down the book for even a minute and finished the comic on a single sitting. Roger Stern at his best. A must read for Spidey fans. Will buy other tobs with hobgoblin for sure now.

Fantastic!
I think Hobgoblin is the best enemy what the writers created in the Spider-Man magazine, really tough and not mad as the Green Goblin was what makes him even more dangerous. So it's no wonder this collection appeared. :).

Good content, but incomplete
True to (retroactive-) continuity, this includes a few issues of PPTSSM that have Roderick Kingsley and, frankly, NOTHING to do with the Hobgoblin (if Ned Leeds were "still" the Hobgoblin, would they have included all of his appearances back to ASM #18?). But what's worse, this book DOESN'T include any of the actual original Hobgoblin's appearances after ASM #251, several of which haven't ever been reprinted, to my knowledge. I have the comics but it's a pain sifting through boxes and plastic sleeves to read a dozen issues. OK, fair enough, this book is just supposed to be "The Origin..." and the contents are identified clearly on the back cover and in the product description. But how about a Volume 2? Should include ASM #260, 261, 274-278, 284-289, Spider-Man vs. Wolverine, Web of SM#29,30...and maybe a few other issues I'm forgetting.
