Awesome. Very slight chlorine taste if you're looking for ...
I've used these on there continents for almost a decade, and I can't see why anyone would prefer a filter. Taste: Awesome. Very slight chlorine taste if you're looking for it. In fact, it eliminated a weird, sulfurous smell that my friend's filtered water had. Ease of use: If you can operate an eye-dropper, you can use this product. Takes 15 minutes to begin working, but I usually just finish off my water before treating a new batch, and don't think to drink till it's ready anyway. Anecdote/Effectiveness: Used this to treat stagnant, turbid water in a South African desert and came away unscathed. + Tastes good + Elimiates odors and off flavors + Stronger oxidant (sterilizer) than chlorine tablets or iodine + Far smaller and lighter than a filter (yes, even your Sawyer) + Faster than most filters for 2+ Liter batches + Kills viruses that pass through filters + Penetrates membranes and biofilms that chlorine and iodine cannot - Takes 15 minutes - Expires (couple year shelf life)

Best Water Treatment Solution for Backcountry Backpacking
Purchased for a 4 day hiking trip through Yosemite National Park. Our group had a collection of different water filtration methods including pumps, and steripens. The Aquamira drops were by far the best water treatment solution. Pros: 1) Compact and light - great for backcountry backpacking. We kept the bottles in an easily accessible side pocket on one of our packs, so no significant unpacking was required when it was time to treat water. 2) Works quickly 3) Has little to no taste effect on the water 4) Can treat large volumes of water simultaneously 5) One pack (2 bottles) can treat a large volume of water - 30 gallons. Was plenty for our 4 day excursion. 6) Kills pathogens better than chlorine or iodine Cons: None We used a one quart nalgene bottle to treat the water.

Works great. Haven't been sick while using these in India, Central, and South America
I have used these on many trips to developing countries where the water from the tap is less than clean and you can't trust the bottled water. (Not to mention the waste from plastic water bottles loitering the countryside and clogging landfills...). For example , the tap water in Leh, Ladakh was a greenish brown color for spring snow melt and rivers being very high (and probably yak and sheep feces from upstream, is my suspicion). I trust these drops enough that I filled my water bottle from that, waited 30 minutes, and drank it. Did that for 4 days before my trek departed, and 3 days after it returned. No problems. There are some not quite perfect bits, though. E.g.- it is a little hard to count the drops by headlamp in a tent with the wind howling and gent shaking to get exactly 8 drops from each bottle. Or sometimes I forget about the drops once mixed and leave the sitting for too long in the cap for an hour; since the instructions say to wait 5 minutes, I am not sure what happens if you wait too long. (The color starts to fade after about 20 minutes so not sure if the effectiveness does too.) If I mess up I just dump them out and mix a new batch, not a big deal. Overall I would say they are 100% effective and no bad taste. I don't mind the iodine taste from the tablets I used before discovering these, but these have advantages in effectiveness and less time before you can drink the water.

Tastes good easy to use
Used this when I traveled to Tonga. Very helpful. Water tasted better and it didn't have a chlorine/ chemical taste. The only downside which really isn't bad is waiting. But with any cleaner you have to wait. 5 min to mix the two A and B solutions together. Then just pour it in your water container. I adjusted my dose from the 10 drops each to just 7.5 drops because I have a 750ml water bottle as apposed to the 1 liter on the instructions. And waited the 30 min to drink it. Portable, easy and tastes good. I like that it comes with a little mixing cap. Great product and will kill cryptosporidium if you wait long enough.

When I first started using it I was confused because Aquamira does not say this product is good for viruses or protozoan pathoge
Okay, so this is my first review that I'm going to write on Amazon. I have been using Aquamira water treatment drops for about 6 years now. I have never had a problem. When I first started using it I was confused because Aquamira does not say this product is good for viruses or protozoan pathogens/Giardia etc. On the package it only says it kills odor causing bacteria and enhances the tastes of stored portable water. I have done a lot of research on the best way to drink safe water while backpacking without breaking the bank. If you refer to the EPA at http://www.epa.gov/ogwdw/mdbp/pdf/alter/chapt_4.pdf They will talk in scientific detail about Chlorine Dioxide. The fact is when USED PROPERLY, "Chlorine dioxide is regarded as a strong disinfectant that is effective at inactivating bacterial, viral, and protozoan pathogens. CT values for Giardia and virus inactivation are shown in Figure 4-5 and Figure 4-6, respectively" All the scientific mumbo jumbo aside it IS EFFECTIVE for inactivating bacterial, viral, and protozoan pathogens. However, Aquamira does not make any claims on their packaging. I'm a light weight backpacker who doesn't want to carry a UV light with batteries and this is the best option for me. If you feel the company should endorse the fact that is kills Giardia than go ahead and get a UV light. but I feel this is the best product for me.

They make water safe, what more do you want?
As far as I'm concerned, these drops are a must-pack for basically any trip into the outdoors. They're easy to use, and they've allowed me to safely drink water from a bunch of different streams without any kind of sickness or any other issues. They're also lightweight, easy to pack, and last a long time, as purifying one liter of water requires just 8 drops from each bottle. There are a few downsides, though. First, you have to wait about a half-hour for the water to be safe. Second, some people complain that the drops make the water have a slight chemical taste.. Third, you do have to be careful to dry off the rim of your water bottle—if you scoop water you'll likely get water on the outside of your bottle's rim that will be sealed off from the rest of the water when the bottle's closed. That means that it won't be treated and could still contain bacteria or viruses. However, none of these are serious problems in my opinion. Waiting a brief time to drink after refilling your water isn't a big problem (especially if you've planned well), and it's not hard to remember to wipe off the rim of your water bottle. As far as the taste goes, I suppose it's personal, but I find that at worst it just tastes like drinking town water in many towns. The quality of the water you scooped up has more of an effect on its taste than these drops do, in my experience. In short, these are great option for any kind of wilderness adventure. They can make practically any water safe from pathogens, they're lightweight and easy to use, and while there are a few downsides I think they're outweighed by the convenience of the lightweight/easy-to-pack form factor and the safety factor (not all filters will filter out everything that these can kill).

Reliable Lightweight Water Treatment
I carried Aquamira for over 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail last year and it was my only water purifier. I could not detect an aftertaste and never suffered any unpleasant symptoms from potentially contaminated water. While the two 1 ounce bottles aren't large or heavy, the drops can easily be decanted into an even smaller bottle (3 or 6 ml, for example) for an especially short trip, saving you more space and that extra little bit of weight. Water goes from source to potable in 20 minutes (slightly longer if very cold), so I would often keep one treated liter to drink and let the other liter treat as I hiked, rotating bottles and never being out of water. Over the course of six months, the cost pretty much equaled or beat what some of my fellow hikers had to spend on replacement filter cartridges or filter pump repairs. There was never a time where I was unable to treat water and that added peace of mind contributed quite a lot to my hike.

Amazing but leaks
I absolutely love these drops for backpacking and day hikes, super light weight, small, and easy to use. BUT the bottles leak like crazy if you are not careful. The altitude makes it work so if you plan on flying with it or hiking at high altitudes just be aware you might not get as many uses out of it. With my second pair of these I kept it in the plastic and placed it somewhere in my pack so that they always stood up vertically which helped but did not completely solve the issue, just a design flaw they will hopefully figure out soon. As far as ease of use I give it 5 stars, and I never noticed a taste which is a huge plus.
