"The Baitrunner gives you the confidence of a legendary drivetrain and auto-return Baitrunner feature as well as better cast-ability; better line lay; less backlash wind knots or tangles; less friction on the line; larger; more comfortable grips; a higher max drag as well as a wider range of Baitrunner settings than its predecessors. From an angling perspective; every individual who has owned and enjoyed using Shimano tackle has a reason to thank a Japanese visionary named Shozaburo Shimano; who in 1921 declared “I aim to make Shimano's products the best in Kansai; then the best in Japan; and finally the best in the world."" For over 80 years; Shimano has concentrated on precision engineering; one step at a time. Creating the most innovative products and processes you can hold in your hand today."

Best out there
It's hard to compare Shimano Bait Runners with anything else. Although the okuma bait feeders are cheaper and work well, the quality is lacking like crazy. Shimano is eons above pretty much every other bait runner reels out there. You absolutely get what you pay for with these reels. They are well worth the extra money. My dad and I still have the older Shimano 6500 reels and work great. Keep in mind they are 20+ years old and have been abused. These newer ones are tanks and very very smooth. They are very durable and we have been using them for a long time. The only thing I wish was the clicker was a little louder. That being said, they have the loudest clickers of any spinning reel. Louder than all of the okumas and penns by a fair amount. I can't really complain about anything with these reels.

Too heavy and baitfeeder switch is too big and sharp
It works well and it cast smoothly, but I don't like the weight of it and the baitrunner switch design. This thing is heavy in comparison to okuma. It's too heavy to be used holding it while surf fishing, I fatigued much faster with this reel than my lighter Okuma avengers baitrunner 55 series. People say it's heavy because of the built quality, but it's not practical for surf fishing with the rod in your hands for a long time, it's just too heavy. I also didn't like how big and sharp the baitfeed switch is designed, it doesn't leave a lot of clearance between your fingers and the switch. It digs and poked into my grip fingers while reeling in heavy fish, but I guess it's ok if you have small hands. I switched back to my Okuma and I am more happy with my okuma. The Okuma design is much more practical for how I surf fish, it's lighter and more comfortable to use. To me the Shimano baitfeeder performance is not that huge of a difference compared to Okuma avenger baitfeeder. I prefer my reel to be lighter in weight and not have the baitfeeder switch digging and poking into your grip fingers while reeling. In the end, I chose comfort in the okuma avengers baitfeeder over a slightly better casting reel in the Shimano baitfeeder 6000D. The okuma cost way less than the Shimano as well. I really wanted to like this reel because it's Shimano brand and it was expensive, but it just didn't work for me. I wish I can return my Shimano for a refund but the return window has come and gone.

Was very smooth out of box but changed after five minutes
After reading many reviews in favour of this reel I decided ask my fishing Buddy for his take whether I should buy it over the penn spinfisher 6500ll and the answer was yes and I did I was so excited to hold the reel when it arrived and it was love at first spin it was so smooth I couldn't wait to show this beautiful machine to my fishing Buddy until about five minutes later the reel started feeling like it has a broken bearing I hadn't a chance to fish with it as yet. As I turn the handle at times it's smooth and other times not. Oh how I want to love this reel but I'm not allowed to because of the fault it is the last thing I expected from a shimano baitrunner d that is so popular and have such good reviews. I must say that this reel deserves one more ๐ and it's because of the wonderful experience of fishing with it despite the aforementioned problem this reel is a gem it trumped the penn 6500ll by far I fished with both for same time and same conditions and the penn is no match.

I think its the best
Bought the Shimano bait runner 6000d with Ugly Stick 12 foot 2 pcs rod and Kast King 30# braided line last year . Surf Fishing with 3 - 4 Oz pyramid sinkers with 1 Oz bait rigs for below surface or 9 " Creek Chub minnows for surface fishing. Even with heavy surf and strong head winds ,this rig set up is a Rocket Launcher . The reel was most expensive $180 but fantastic . The braided line casts the best . I've caught everything from blue fish to big sharks.

Sturdy, reliable, good price!
It is a Shimano! I have never had an issue with this brand and have had some reels for over 15 years now. My Stradic (16 years old) was sent in for rebuild and only needed a new roller bearing. Amazing quality. You pay a bit more, but if you take decent care of these, they last forever!

Prefer this Baitrunner over my Spinfisher V 4500LL
I love this reel now having used it for a Summer of fishing in Florida. I can compare the 'baitrunner' features between this 4000 Baitrunner and a Penn 4500 Spinfisher V Liveliner which I also fish with. When doing some live bait free-line fishing, I much prefer the Shimano Baitrunner due to the better and lower drag control you can get using the Baitrunner/Liveliner feature of this Rod over the Spinfisher V. The drag on the Penn Spinfisher Livelinner drag, just doesn't go quite low enough for me sometimes. Maybe this can be modified by changing parts, but the lowest out of the box liveliner drag setting still can take some effort to pull the line out. With the Shimano Baitrunner, the drag can be almost set down to a slight finger pull of the line. This cannot be done with the Spinfisher 4500LL Liveliner drag setting. (Please note this review only discusses the Baitrunner/LiveLiner drag settings of each reel)

Like these reels so much I got 4
great quality and functionality, bulletproof build, no goofy frills or ugly colors. No complaints about these reels at all after many hours of fishing. Paired the 8000D with 10ft 2.75lb Nash Scope rods (from the UK), 30lb test Power Pro Super 8 Slick braid, and 3oz weights. Casting over 60 yards no problem, and even smaller fish are fun to catch.
