It is made of solid wood and features a wooden handle, a steel covered rim, and a 16G steel umbo. The front is stained dark wood, while the back side is painted black. Judging by the images - it more than fit the part. As a bit of an arms enthusiast. The shield is BIG - it's heavy and the handle is very sturdy. Probably more what a Viking shield would be like - not super heavy - but not light - meant to be broken in battle. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! My only gripe was that it came completely covered in lubricating oil and covered in plastic. The oil was darn near impossible to get off. Had to use kerosene on a rag to get the oil off - then use water and dish detergent to get the kerosene off. But - it was worth it! Review: Gorgeous shield for the money...that you should put on your wall and leave there. - This a very pretty shield, it looks right hanging on the wall and is made of some of the solid wood I have seen. The metal rimming around the edge is a very luxurious touch. That said...such a looker should NOT be used in combat. Two reasons: 1. its just got such a nice look it would be a shame to smash it up. And yes, viking shields get absolutely WRECKED when used. 2. This is complaint something that is sort of...theoretical. The hand guard on the back. It's in the right place! No arm strapping nonsense here BUT the handle's wood does not go the length of the shield. It stops about 5 inches from where it is bolted to the boss. Maybe this has been done to save weight? As I said it is VERY nice wood for a shield and dense. More like what I would expect in furniture honestly. However there is a problem with this design. The reason the handle traditionally travels the entire length of the shield isn't that Vikings were too dumb to realized that less wood meant less weight. The length of the handle reinforces the shield. Helping it hold together even after it starts to splinter. Anyone who had ever had a shield broken up on the can tell you that the shield will stay structurally sound and useful right up until the handle starts to separate, then the whole thing falls apart in a shower of kindling in one or two hits. This will make your opponent feel and look like a god of battle but aside from the cool visual... it sucks for you. That said you could PROBABLY get through a battle with it. Well enough built to make a solid cross training workout implement, seems like it could survive some sparring. I'll test it out w some red dragon synthetics and update if anything goes wrong. So far good quality for price, good deal if you plan to actually play with it.
