A great book.
Calamity Jane and wild Bill Hickok were acquaintances. He did not seem to particularly care for her. They were never married. At least thatβs the opinion of most historians

Great read for all Wild Bill and Calamity Jane fans.
This book delves into the behind the scenes lives of two of the old West's most famous and/.or infamous characters. A very interesting biography of both Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. Delves in her life and sheds light on the legend. Must of Wild Bill's life was already known, but we get a little more insight into his life also, as well as the connection between the two that goes beyond the legends.

Enjoyable book to read.
Found the book an excellent read and depiction of the l life and times of Hickok and Calamity Jane. Having been to Deadwood made it seem so real and intriguing. Would recommend this book.

A "light" on two Western Legends
History of the 1900s' western development was written not by historians, but by "yellow" press agents and reporters selling stories in a time when the eastern public was hungry for entertainment to ease the finincial crush of a depressed economy and the country coming out of the horrors of the civil war. Thus legends were "created" from fiction and "hear say". Reminds the reader of modern Hollywood press reports. Very interesting to examine truth AND fiction side by side.

Good read!!
Just, returned from a trip to DEADWOOD, SD; bought the TV series of DEADWOOD, and had to read up on the people. It is really amazing...I bought other books on Calamity Jane and the town.

Warts and All
This is an interesting account of two people whose names are well known but whose lives were very different to the Hollywood versions. It's a lightweight read, but probably all the better for it and well written either way. Neither character comes out of in a particularly good light - they certainly weren't heroes in any sense. The book shows how we probably only know about both of them because of early hack writers glamorising what were fairly ordinary and tawdry lives to produce sensationalist biographies and articles - yet they somehow remain fascinating characters nonetheless.
