Carnivores of the World: Second Edition (Princeton Field Guides)

terrestrial mammalian carnivores!
Carnivores of the World (Princeton Field Guide): It's THE invaluable reference for those, like me, who are compelled by obsession to identify & classify all animals seen. I'll only see a very small fraction of the listed species, even at the zoo. But now I can be reasonably assured that a look through the book afterward will result in a match. The consistent format, data on left pages, illustrations on the right is great. Given the thickness of some of the other guides in the series, including the cetaceans would've been logical. But I guess that they're not, because there are (2) separate guides for them. The skulls & footprints at the end of this volume aren't especially useful to me. But others may disagree. Heavy, semi-gloss pages are an added plus. My highest recommendation for general reader guides on the subject.

Review of the 2nd Edition
I have both the first and second editions of this very handy and attractive guide to the worlds carnivores. It remains a favourite, with nice illustrations and informative species accounts. This 2nd edition has larger dimensions than the first, which subtly shunts it from field guide into reference book territory. This means that the plates are larger, although I think the illustrations look even finer at the earlier smaller size. The new addition of range maps is most welcome, an essential element that had been lacking in the first edition. There is also the updated taxonomy. The author is clearly a committed Darwinist however and speculative theories and assumptions pepper the text throughout, which he presents as if they were fact.*if the author happens to read this, I have an interesting anecdote: a gathering of up 500 African Wild Dog in about 1913 is well-described in Isak Dinesens "Out of Africa".

Authoratative
This guide is handy if you see a predator on Nature or some other wildlife program and want to know more about it. The plates and maps are good, and the text by Luke Hunter packs in a lot of info. The book is also depressing through no fault of its own; man is driving many of these animals to the brink of extinction.
