From New York Times bestselling author Larry Gonick and Davidson College biology professor David Wessner comes this comprehensive and humorous cartoon guide to topics in biology Did you faint when your middle school science teacher asked you to dissect a frog? Do you think DNA stands for “Don’t Know the Answer”? Do you still cling to the belief that osmosis was the name of Ozzy Osbourne’s last tour? If you said yes to any of these questions—or even if you didn’t—then you need The Cartoon Guide to Biology . The latest from New York Times bestselling author Larry Gonick—writing with Davidson College biology professor David Wessner—is a hilarious and informative handbook to the science of life. From the inner workings of the cell, to the magic of gene expression, to the Krebs and Calvin cycles, to sexual and asexual reproduction, The Cartoon Guide to Biology uses simple, clear, humorous illustrations to make biology’s most complex concepts understandable and entertaining. Whether you’re peering into the microscope for the first time or brushing up after decades of de-evolution, this book has you covered. Review: Ignore the negative reviews if you're buying the print version. - Excellent book and and a fine complement to the Cartoon Guide to Physics and the Cartoon Guide to Chemistry by the same author. I did not purchase the Kindle version, so I can't answer for the negative experience those readers have had. If you're buying the print version, this is a great book which comprehensively and accessibly breaks down a complex subject into easy - and amusing - chunks. It has certainly helped me reconnect with biology after many years. 5 stars! Review: Clever and informative, per usual - I can't speak for the digital format (as other reviewers have thus far) but the soft-cover version is great. I own several of Gonick's books and the content of this one is on-par with his other works. Clever and informative, per usual.

Graphic novels for a short attention span
I gave it 4 stars for clarity. This book would probably be best for high school students or someone who dropped out of high school and wants to put forth as little effort as possible to learn biology. Not as entertaining as I had hoped, but I may write a better one next year.

Advanced enough to help with MCAT studying
I was pleasantly surprised the book is advanced to help me with MCAT prep. It’s actually helping me digest complex topics like cellular metabolism.

Good for college-aged people studying biology.
I normally like this cartoonists, but this book was a little hard to follow. It's more for college-aged people with higher reading comprehension.

Vivid pics and great illustrations
I got this series of books for my daughter. She was quite interested in reading it since the pics in the cartoon book give her a good way to understand the concepts rather than large quantity of texts. Great recommendation for anyone who enjoys fun in science and math!

The science of life, for the scientifically inclined
Very often biology explanations for the layperson stop when things become interesting. Example, plants capture carbon and respiration releases carbon are trated as mere trivialities in a climate change discussion. However, how do plants capture carbon, or how do living organisms release carbon? This, and many other things, is explained in this cartoon guide. It is Larry Gonick's artistry at its best, and his scientific wit completed with Dave Wessner expertise. Their approach can be called bottom-up and mechanist. They start from the simplest molecules, and then zoom out to macro-molecules, then to the cell, the organ, the organism, and finally the environment. They do so in greater details for the first levels, because they want to explain the most universal mechanisms of life. And that is how they fully answer our layperson questions. Certainly, reading this guide requires an inclination for science, but it is the magic of Larry Gonick's cartoons to give a pleasant visage to complex names and formulas. In short, this cartoon guide belongs to the bookshelf of anyone is interested in biology: the student, the expert, or the just curious.

Difficult to read on Kindle due to the formatting -pc/laptop/tablet.
Difficult to read on Kindle due to the formatting -pc/laptop/tablet. The 2-page format and font causes too much strain to read.
