Very good option for what I needed
I purchased this converter to allow a Sceptre TV with only SPDIF Coaxial audio output to work with a Samsung soundbar with only optical input. Over the last couple months it has worked well. It was fairly simple to setup, you just set a selector switch, attach the cables and attach the power. I am not sure the switch settings printed on the device are the clearest, but the instructions describe both options in detail. The package includes a power adapter, but the device also has a mini-USB port that can be used for power. I have been able to use a standard mini-USB cable to power this from the USB port on my TV. This is great since it means I don't have to use an extra electrical outlet on a power strip. A very useful device if you have this specific need. There are other inexpensive options, but the quality of this one seems better and with the option to convert either direction it seems more versatile. The USB port is also a huge benefit for me.

Doesn't Work
I bought this so that I could get sound from a headphone jack to a receiver that only has optical inputs. The LED lights up, I have the switch set to the appropriate input. I can see that the optical output is on, but no audio.

I like the USB power source option
It is OK for an analog stereo signal that needs converting from optical to coaxial. The frequency range is adequate for human hearing. I question how it would function with a DTS 5.1 or 7.1 signal. It might not totally reproduce a more complex signal because of bandwidth ability. Once again it is totally OK with analog stereo sources. I like the USB power source option. From my review of what is available this is the best option. It works great.

Much nicer than the cheaper Optical->SPDIF units, and a little more versatile
Much nicer than the cheaper units. If you search Amazon, you will find another style of cheaper Optical->SPDIF converter sold under a bunch of brand-names and labels. They all have the same "3 port" design, size, and layout. They are all JUNK -- it's a transistor and two capacitors inside. This unit costs a bit more, but has a few more conversion options, dual outputs, and some indicators. It works much better -- less popping, nice strong signal, no issues.

Don't waste your time or money
I tried every conceivable method to make this work, but to no avail. Tried to connect my bluray (optical audio) to my surround sound (coaxial) I got nothing. Don't waste your time or money.

Great service, fantastic product
This little box is amazing: it allows you to input two digital sources to an amplifier that has only one SPDIF input. We have a new tube amplifier for our audio system, and we wanted to play both streaming internet radio (MOG/Pandora, etc via SONOS) and CDs (on our OPPO 105)) through that one digital input in order to take full advantage of the amp's high-quality DAC. The switch on this converter allows us to do just that: when we want to change the digital input, we simply use the handy switch on the side of the converter box. You need a good TOSLINK cable connecting one of your sources to the device, and a good Coaxial cable to connect your other source to the converter (I got a Canare digiflex gold cable for that purpose after first trying an inferior cable). The audio quality from both sources is superb. A note on J&R Galaxies--They are outstanding.. I would give them 10 stars for customer service if I could! When I originally ordered the wrong product ( I thought I needed a 3-way switch but it did not solve my problem), I contacted J&R Galaxies. They responded promptly, diagnosing my problem and recommending that I return the switch to them and order this bi-directional converter from Amazon, which I did. I have rarely encountered such excellent customer service.
