Can you connect the lan port to a network switch and use the ap as a dhcp server for wired clients?

Accepted Answer

Yes, they now have a gateway mode for the AP that can connect to a switch and serve other network devices. However, connectivity to the other child nodes in a gateway setup are limited to wireless mesh connectivity only. One would think that if you connected all child nodes to the switch then each AP should be able to communicate via the switch.  In a single site set-up that us not the case. The only way to make child nodes communicate over cable is to set up a second site which means administering 2 sites within the Aruba software.  Tech support is aware of this issue and has shared it with the product team as a future enhancement. In a nutshell these are self-contained Linux boxes with 4 ethernet ports.  As the product matures it may be a great product.  For now you need to expect extremely slow install set-up and boot time as each node must go through a slow update process.  The latest firmware update last week fixed a number of bugs causing difficulties in attaching multiple nodes to a site network.  The product still lacks some basic tools such as Ping and Speedtests that can be run directly on the nodes to test connectivity.

You can work around the limitations.  For me my slightly older Linksys Velop implementation supports gateway DHCP and wired backhaul and mesh radio network with less issues and single site management.

Do you need the power supply if you use it as a router?

Have set up several of these networks using Aruba Instant On AP11 D's as routers, that require their own power supply when configuring as a router. The AP11D's can be set up as an access point only using POE also.
