The Glenn Miller Story

I saw this in 1962 on my high school drama class and have loved Big Band music ever since. Since my eldest grandson has become an aficionado also, I got this as a Christmas gift for him and the whole family enjoyed watching it and even singing along with the music 🎶

The first time I ever saw this movie was sometime in the late 1950's or early1960's and was enthralled by the passion of Jimmy Stewart's portrayal of Glenn Miller. And the story is well told. I was particularly amused by the portrayal of his "by-the-book" commanding officer, a colonel, when he was in the army taking exception to his substituting his music for the staid military marches, and the reaction, until General Hap Arnold (a real live army officer, played by Barton MacLane) congratulated Captain Glenn Miller on how he enjoyed the music played in a review, and how it reminded him of home... where Glenn Miller's records were played by his children in their home.The music is classic, and well delivered. Anyone interested in the big band era and the fantastic music it produced should watch this movie. The Blu-ray is crisp. The audio and video quality are superb and the music and performances are memorable.

Wonderful movie. although not part of the movie it was very fitting this year that we find out what happened to his aircraft which disappeared in the English Channel The aircraft was flying low in an ordinance disposal area underneath a flight of returning RAF bombers who jettisoned their loads and subsequent detonations caused the aircraft to crash into the ocean. This was witnessed by several crewmen and reported. It was only after research many years after that a conclusion was made that Major Miller, his pilot, and one other passenger had been downed by accident. Still in light of that Jimmy Stewart made a convincing Glenn Miller in this movie.

I’ve seen many bad reviews for this Blu-ray I have no idea what they are talking about. It looks fantastic and is in the 1:85 aspect ratio. The Blu-ray has the original theatrical release and the 1985 release version which is a few minutes shorter. Stereo sound it’s fantastic. I highly recommend this release and have no idea where these bad reviews are coming from....

The commentary consists of auteur nincompoopery. Auteurists think directors rather than screenplaywrights are the authors of movies so they can refer to, for example, this movie as "Anthony Mann's", rather than "Oscar Brodney's and Valentine Davies'", Glenn Miller Story in order to delude themselves into believing that movies are art and avoid the hard work of convincing movie studios to give the real authors control of their movies. No self-respecting writer would write for the movies because they wouldn't have control. As a result a far higher proportion of movies than of any other fictional form are adaptations. I realise that many movie screenplay credits do not list all the writers who worked on the movie, but that is no excuse for calling the director the author. As for The Glenn Miller Story, the commentary should have told how accurate the movie is. Instead, the commentary consists of a lot of irrelevancies about the director and star and listening to it is a complete waste of time.

This was our favorite film. Watched it on our first date over 60 years ago.
