Some of the reviews indicated that people didn't know what the snap ring was for (like the guy who used an arbor press to force the fittings in), as there are no instructions included with this pump. I believe that I learned the snap ring trick while working on other Kohlers, don't recall, as fuel pumps (even factory Kohler) switched over from metal to plastic, without fixed fittings but fittings that you have to insert, for a long time. At any rate, get your large snap ring pliers, open the snap ring up with the pliers (leaving the pliers facing inward on the pump, away from the side you are inserting the fitting into) and maneuver the snap ring ends over the tabs on the side of the pump housing where you are inserting the fitting. Orient the fitting in the same direction as your old fitting (e.g., same tilt angle if using the 90 degree fittings) aligning the splines on the fitting with their mates on the pump housing. Push the fitting in as far as possible - you might have to tap softly with a rubber hammer to get the fitting all the way in. Once you are done with that fitting open the snap ring back up with the pliers that you left in place and do the other side. Sounds complicated but literally a couple of minutes to complete. BTW, I recommend buying the fuel pump rebuild kit https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07LCG2DBC/, using the spring from your old pump (the spring in the kit is too strong for this application) to rebuild your old one. That way you will have a spare fuel pump for next time. The rebuild kit worked on my 30+ year old original Kohler pump and it was a breeze to install.
