    Great book!!!

This is such a great book for learning how to clean fleece for spinning. What I really like is how it addresses the best methods for cleaning different types of fleeces, because one cleaning method does NOT fit all! I wish I'd found this book a long time ago, because my previous methods were...umm... not the best. I definitely recommend this book for anybody who starts with raw fleece for their projects. I don't enjoy washing fleeces, but I'd rather do it correctly from the very beginning instead of having to deal with the consequences of a poorly washed fleece later on. Been there, done that, not fun. This book provides the solution to that problem! Plus, the author includes a lot of other good pointers re: preparation when handling different types of fleece, so it's a win/win all around.

Wash your animal fibers correctly and effectively

This book could have been proofread, but nobody seeems to care, and the material is so complete and helpful that I am giving it a pass. You can read the whole book or just the parts you need for the next fleece, but I think reading the whole book ensures that you get the most from it. Mary takes everything into account. I have hard water and learned from this book how best to address the problem and not hurt the fiber. If you ever find yourself washing raw animal fiber, read this book!

BEST BOOK EVER for fiber artists

I want to thank you, Mary Pavis Egbert for making this book available in paperback. After I purchased it, the hard drive went out on my computer so I would have lost my electronic file. So, I had 5 pounds of fine 3rd clip (yearling first clip) mohair from Texas that I had purchased between 10 and 12 YEARS ago. Is was absolutely the filthiest, smelliest and trashy mohair I have ever purchased. Which is probably why I stashed it away. Got it out and followed your book, using Kookaburra scour. Washing a pound at a time in a 32.75qt water bath canner, I washed, then rinsed 3 times. Washed a second time, with 3 more rinses. When I said it was fithly, I mean it! LOOK at the shine now! Trash should come out easily now with my triple pickerI also have 22 pounds of Corriedale from covered sheep at Whitfish Bay Farm in WI. CLEAN fleeces. One wash, 2 rinses using Unicorn Power Scour.I am well pleased! Will take me a while to get the Corry washed, then plan on taking to a mill for a wool/mohair blend yarn.And. BTW, we have terribly hard water so purchased sodium hex salt and used per the book. I also set my hot water heater at 125 degrees. One thing I like about this big canner is that it has a lid! Here are examples of the washed mohair and wool. I encourage others, if you haven't purchased your copy yet. DO IT. I have been using Ivory dish soap for 25 years, but no more!
