Looking beyond the national leadership of the suffrage movement, an acclaimed historian gives voice to the thousands of women from different backgrounds, races, and religions whose local passion and protest resounded throughout the land. For far too long, the history of how American women won the right to vote has been told as the tale of a few iconic leaders, all white and native-born. But Susan Ware uncovered a much broader and more diverse story waiting to be told. Why They Marched is a tribute to the many women who worked tirelessly in communities across the nation, out of the spotlight, protesting, petitioning, and insisting on their right to full citizenship. Ware tells her story through the lives of nineteen activists, most of whom have long been overlooked. We meet Mary Church Terrell, a multilingual African American woman; Rose Schneiderman, a labor activist building coalitions on New Yorkโs Lower East Side; Claiborne Catlin, who toured the Massachusetts countryside on horseback to drum up support for the cause; Mary Johnston, an aristocratic novelist bucking the Southern ruling elite; Emmeline W. Wells, a Mormon woman in a polygamous marriage determined to make her voice heard; and others who helped harness a groundswell of popular support. We also see the many places where the suffrage movement unfoldedโin church parlors, meeting rooms, and the halls of Congress, but also on college campuses and even at the top of Mount Rainier. Few corners of the United States were untouched by suffrage activism. Wareโs deeply moving stories provide a fresh account of one of the most significant moments of political mobilization in American history. The dramatic, often joyous experiences of these women resonate powerfully today, as a new generation of young women demands to be heard. Review: Interesting subject - Poorly written Review: Excellent introduction - Terrific introduction to some of the fascinating women who fought for the vote. Some are very well-known (or should be) leaders of the movement, while others are ordinary but fascinating people who got swept up in this extraordinary struggle. Thereโs also a great series of photos of the ephemera of the era โ banners, placards, programs, pins and cartoons. Iโll be giving this as a gift to many women in my family! (And hey, maybe the men too.)

Excellent history of the women's suffrage movement
Why They Marched is an entertaining and delightful book. I'd give it a strong recommendation for anyone who's interested in the women's suffrage movement and the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. It's very well researched, well written, and reasonably readable. The author is clear an expert on the women's suffrage movement. Most of the profiles are of women who aren't particularly well known, and some readers might not be enamored with all of the personal details. The notes are thorough and detailed; there's no bibliography.

great choice for class
During the centennial of the passing of the amendment finally granting women the franchise, I selected this text for my freshman college writing class. The students liked the short but informative chapters, the diverse mix of women depicted, the opportunities for comparing the women featured. All of us learned a great deal and enjoying class discussions.

NOT a boring history book
This will be my Christmas gift book for all my female friends. It consists of chapters about individual movers and shakers of the suffrage movement, the well known, the little known and the unknown until this book. It also tells the accompanying political atmosphere and sometimes quirky situations these brave and clever souls found themselves in as they fought for the women's right to vote. Very informative and truly entertaining.

Amazing stories
What we did not know! And it has only been 100 years since women got the right to vote! Very well presented.

Product was water damaged and moldy!
This book arrived completely water damaged and moldy - the box was dry so it was clearly damaged before packaging. Extremely disappointed! Wish I could give zero stars!
