It works...
I was a bit hesitant to buy this pill cutter, but after using it today all misgivings are gone. I have some rather large pills that must be cut in half for the correct dosage (the V.A. is trying to save money by forcing us to cut pills in half) and my present pill cutter is just about dead because of those pills. My other cutter has a blade about the thickness of a razor blade which bends at an angle every time I cut one of those monsters with it. The result is an uneven cut with two pieces not even close to the same size and lots of chips and powder as well. The "Equa-Dose" cutter simply makes a nice straight cut and I end up with two pieces the same size and no dust or chips. When I looked at the product page for the "Equa-Dose" I wasn't overly confident that it would do the job; however, I saw almost no other options for large pills...except for one cutter that resembles a pair of pliers (and I can just envision my pill halves flying across the room), so I took the plunge and bought an "Equa-Dose". Good decision! I even tried it on a smaller pill and it cut it evenly just like it did the big pills. There is one thing that they could improve on, and that is adding some small handles to increase the leverage for cutting pills. It isn't a requirement, but it would make it easier for some folks who may have trouble gripping this device. If you don't have any large pills to cut there are a lot of other pill cutters out there that will probably do just what you need, and for less money. But if you have large pills that strain the mechanism of a less substantial cutter (this one is made of aluminum and isn't going to be destroyed by a pill), then by all means get one of these and save yourself some frustration. I got mine today and have already cut over half a bottle of those big pills, and with no problems whatsoever. How long will it last? I honestly don't know, but I am betting on it being useful for a very long time. Edit 9-10-2020 I uploaded a (very) short video of me cutting one of my large pills. I tried to upload a second video of me cutting a normal-sized pill, but Amazon doesn't allow two videos in any one review. So...I decided to let you see a large pill being cut since it is a tad more difficult than a regular pill. I must add, however, that both pills were cut cleanly in two as have been all others I have cut with this device. Also, don't let the Vine Voice throw you; I paid full price for this cutter and would gladly do so again! Update 5-18-2025 Here I am buying another one of these. Did my other one fail? No way...I misplaced it on a recent trip. I used it regularly since 2020 without a hitch and it was still going strong; good as new described it perfectly. I will try to use more diligence this time, but some things are just worth the money and this is one of those things! 11-20-2025: My old EquaDose finally showed up and now I have them both to compare. I noticed on the first use of the new one that it felt somehow different than the old one. It's difficult to describe, but the entire cutting action seemed...I don't know, just different. Maybe it's like an old favorite car that suits you to a "T" and then you drive someone else's car - same model, same everything - and it isn't quite the same. All I could do was shake my head and wonder what the difference was; until the old one surfaced. The sticker on the back of the old one says "crafted in the USA", while the new one says "manufactured in China". Crafted versus manufactured...there it is! That probably explains it; or maybe it explains nothing. All I can say is there is a difference; a difference you would never know if you only have one of these. Having said all of this, would I still recommend this pill cutter? Yes, yes, and yes again. I stand by my earlier assessment and still feel this is the finest pill cutter you can buy for the money.

It Works!!!!
I have been giving my cat blood pressure medication for a few years. They are the smallest pills I have ever seen and they need to be split in 1/4 's !!! I have tried probably 20+ pill splitters - each would work for maybe a few times then same old result - crushed pills worthless to me! Often I would only get one usable quarter per pill. So yes, this is a bit expensive but the money it has saved me in having to refill his medication over and over has more than paid for itself. It DOES take some time to get the positioning right - because the pill is so small. It can be a bit tedious at first but after a while I know exactly how to do it. Again this is worth the effort in the long run! Update: I have now been using this splitter since November - 6 months and it is still as great as it was when I got it. I have saved a lot of money as don't ruin pills anymore. I have the smallest pills I have ever seen with NO scoring to split. They are expensive and I was averaging maybe 2 doses out of 4 per pill. Quite a difference. I have been splitting this pill for almost 5 years and gone through every pill splitter created and this is the ONLY ONE that has worked. I have seen so many complaints about it's difficulty in using or showing crushed pills and I will say there is a learning curve. Meaning you do have to position it correctly to get equal quarters so yes, in the first few uses I did average only 2 pieces per 4. However, not once did the pill crush. After I learned exactly how to place it and use it, no issues - ever! So I guess the bottom line is how much is it worth your time and money to take the time you need to practice with it when ultimately you are rewarded with a pill splitter you will use long term and save money! I have pictured a cut pill. This is what I get each and every time I use it. The pill actually looks larger in the photo and I forgot to take a photo before splitting the last pill in this bottle but in comparison it is half the size of an Advil tablet, or less than half the size. It's tiny!! Update: It is 2025 - 7 years since I wrote this review. I have over the years had to split pills for 5 cats as they aged and a Golden Retriever. Over the years sadly 4 cats have passed away as did the golden. All lived long happy lives. However, my husband and I have also aged and now we are splitting pills for our selves and our 1 remaining cat. So there has never been a long time between uses in our house! Just want to say it is still as sharp as ever, never crushes, always perfect cut. Some pills easier than others but most are tiny. I must admit it did take some time for me to learn how to eyeball the perfect position and adjust between the blades which may not be an easy task for arthritic or unstable hands (which I don't have yet fortunately) but otherwise it's still as sharp and precise as ever.

Best-in-Class Pill Splitter
There are two mechanisms for pill splitters: the guillotine, which has a single blade that you press against a flat surface, and the vice, which has two blades that you press against each other. The vice mechanism is far superior. The guillotine mechanism is the default in cheap, plastic pill splitters. It causes small tablets to fragment and leaves a lot of powder residue from tablets that tend to crumble. The vice mechanism, on the other hand, creates clean, precise cuts, so that when you put the two parts of a tablet that was split in half together, you often can't tell that the tablet had been cut at all. There are no fragments that fall off when a tablet is split, but, on rare occasions, there can be an extremely small amount of powdery residue. The Equadose Pill Splitter is the best-in-class pill splitter. It's the only one that I'd even think about using on small tablets. It's sturdily made and very satisfying to use. It's a buy-it-for-life item, which makes it worth the money many times over. Please don't waste money on plastic pill splitters. If you need to cut small (or large) pills in half, the Equadose Pill Splitter is by far the best solution. Other customers have written about having difficulty aligning a pill for an equal split. If you have a tablet with an indentation in the middle to help you to see where to split it, you just need to align that indentation with one of the blades, which is easy. The important part is to make sure that the tablet's edges are vertically aligned. That is, when the tablet is within the blades, you don't want the tablet to be tilted, but perfectly straight horizontally. I think that this is what customers struggle with, but it's not terribly difficult. It just takes some practice to develop the right technique and gain confidence, at which point you can split pills quickly, without frustration. I wish that someone would create a video that compares splitting the same type of small, round pill using both a guillotine and vice splitter. There is a night-and-day difference. I would never buy a plastic pill splitter again. If you need to split pills, the Equadose Pill Splitter is the best pill splitter on the market. I daresay that it's even fun to use.

Easy to cut. Easy to position to get an even cut. Will not dull with use.
This is by far the best pill cutter I’ve ever used. It cuts the pill perfectly every time. The only negative thing I can say about it is this: when I stand several of my round pills on their side to cut it the lid will not close. I have to hold my hand over the top when I cut so they stay in after the cut. My pills are not big so only small one will cut with the lid closed. But I don’t mind because of the good clean cut and it won’t dull like the cutters with the razor blades. It’s expensive but well worth it.

Don't hesistate. It really is that much better than a generic, cheap one
Alright, I was hesitant to spend this much ($30) on a pill cutter. I mean, that's a lot of money compared to the one I bought at a drug store for a few bucks years ago. And that cheap one worked great for many years until I needed heart medicines and one of them would crumble when I cut it. Of course I'm needing to cut my pills because that's what insurance will cover. Well after having enough crumbles to make an apple crumble pie, I took a chance on this $30 and I'm very happy to report that it really is that much better. NO MORE CRUMBLES. I've been using this for about 2 weeks, and have two different pills that liked to crumble. One is an elongated almost chalk-like pill and the other one is a very tiny pill. Neither liked to split with a cheap cutter but they have been splitting perfectly every chance they get with the Equadose. PROS + No more Crumbles + Perfect splits, every time, as long as you line it up properly. But it will always split where you tell it to. + Very high quality materials compared to alternative products. + Pocket/Travel size. Doesn't take up much space and would travel well, better than my cheap, plastic, bulky one from a drug store. + Easy to wipe down after use (if sharing) + Can accommodate large pills as long as they are not too thick (you cut the pills on their side). CONS - More Expensive than alternatives, but alternatives won't split pills as evenly. - You need to align the pill, if you have dexterity problems this may be an issue and I would look at the Equadose V2 splitter which has a traditional pill holder that aligns the pill for you. I personally picked the Equadose V1 though because it accommodated larger pills and was easier to clean (for sharing) - I will need to buy proper crumbles for my apple pie Anyway, 5/5 stars. highly recommend this. It does its job perfectly and gives me the peace of mind that I'm not losing chunks of my life saving medicine. UPDATE 9/24 - one and a half years later and this thing is still performing perfectly!! One of my pills I started to need to cut them into 1/4s and this has no problem with that even though it is a tiny pill! Amazing!

Hit, Hit & Miss?
My husband takes a lot of different medications. Each month, I fill up a 31-day, 4 times a day, pill keeper. That’s a lot of pills. He only has several pills that need to be split, but since I have to split a lot each month, I wanted to find a splitter that could handle heavy use. The razor blades of a regular splitter get dull too soon, in my opinion, and you can’t really see what’s going on while you’re doing it, unless you hold it up in the air. So, that’s why I decided to get the Equadose. It seems like the answer to a lot of little problems, but think again: The price - You’re paying a lot of money for a new idea that is different than a razor blade. They count on your reaction to it being new and different to justify the price. Dexterity - If you have problems with arthritis in your hands/fingers, issues with fine motor skill, or any problem holding tiny objects, etc., this is not for you. Not only does it take more thought in using it, you have to hold the pill while making sure it’s lining up correctly, and keep holding it until both sides are secure enough to let go of the pill. So your fingers are in the way a lot. Don’t forget you’ll be doing this with a pill that isn’t big and that you probably already have problems holding anyway. And it does take some pressure when squeezing the two sides together. If you don’t have any strength in your fingers, it can be difficult, and hurt. Time - This isn’t a contraption you’ll just automatically know how to use. It takes practice getting your pills lined up correctly. You may not even get used to it. Even when you do have it lined up and ready, it looks off because the two parts are coming from the sides and not directly from above and below, vertically. My brain didn’t want to accept it as being evenly lined up. This isn’t something that’s only gonna be quick, even if you are able to do it. You should go to that YouTube and look at one of their own specific “instructional” videos. Think about what you’re looking at. These demonstrators are very familiar with the cutter, yet even they show it’s not that simple or easy. Also notice how the tips are not absolutely vertical ( line up evenly) in the pics here on Amazon and in the videos. There’s nothing wrong, but it does make it hard to judge for the middle. I cut several scored (called the breakline) pills. It cuts fine, but even being scored, it did take some pressure. I then cut some pills that didn’t have scored lines. The results were about the same, and the same amount of pressure needed. I even used it on a .5 mm 5mg Lisinopril (scored), which is a little over 1/8 inch (less than ¼ inch). It cut just as well. Unless you can afford to waste pills, I wouldn’t recommend experimenting. If you don’t line it up almost perfectly, you can mess them up, including crushing them. Just practice on other types of pills like vitamins, or something that don’t matter before you cut your medication. Note: Someone gave this a one star and provided a pic of two blue oblong pieces. I agree with others who say this was probably an operator error. But here is my problem with this review. One hundred fifty-eight people found this helpful. All you see is an Equadose cutter and a broken pill. We have no proof the reviewer used this cutter to cut that pill. We don’t have proof they even used any cutter. Too many people just look at a pic and let someone influence their decision about everything, without any evidence. People need to use logic and think about things. Stop relying solely on the reviews. Many are honest, but many are not. Many problems are the reviewer's fault by their own admission, and they still get to post a bad review. Just pay attention to what's being said. If you just have a couple of pills to split from time to time, don't mind the cost and don’t mind not getting it done and over with quickly, it might be something you can use. You will mess up some of your pills using it. I was looking for something that could cut a lot of pills. The Equadose can surely cut the way it’s meant; however, I don’t think it’s that great because every time, there will be several adjustments and certain things you must do to finally get it just right, for each little pill. So that’s it. Caution: If you take ANY PILLS that have not been scored, make sure your doctor has instructed that is okay to split. There are too many drugs which deliver medicine over time and can release too much at once if you take a cut pill. (I would have given it a 4-star rating but I feel like this has deliberate product deception. It may seem like nothing to some, but many people have to take meds and need reliable products they can rely on.)

Well worth it!
This product feels very durable and it does the job great. It cuts the pills evenly and contains the pill inside the cutter. If your looking for a pill cutter I couldn’t recommend this product enough.
