Review: Blugill and Ultralights - This reel is by far the best spincast reel that I've ever used. Smooth casts, extreemly smooth retrieves, and a very solid build. The drag is located nicely. Easy to get to, but not easy to bump by mistake, and it adjusts nicely too. I've only had it out on one trip so far, but I think I'm going to enjoy it for a long, long time. I need to get a few more. Here's my story. Edit - I've had these reels for 4 years now, and they're still the best spincast reels I've ever had the pleasure to use. No mater how fast and hard I reel a fish in, the reel never loads the line up, and always casts perfectly smooth on the next cast. I mostly fish for bluegill, and some crappie. I've not had much of a problem finding reels that work well with a bobber and split shot. Sure some are junk, but over the last 25 years I've found a number of $20 reels that work quite well. However, I prefer to use artificial baits like beetle spins, or 1 1/2" grubs on a 1/32 oz jig head with or without a spinner. Finding a good reel that will cast a 1/32 oz jig head with a 1 1/2" grub has been a challenge, but I think my quest is finally over. I tried useing open face reels for a few years but I never got used to it so I went back to looking for a good spincast. I don't get to fish nearly as much as I used to, but was finaly able to get out with my 4yo daughter over the weekend. I had ordered a pair of these reels to replace some ageing Johnson Century 100B reels that I have on a couple of my 6' ultralights. I didn't get the reels ordered early enough, but they did arrive the afternoon before our little adventure. I have a few 5 1/2' rods that have some older reels on them, so I swapped one of those out for one of the Omega 2 reels. Once I got my daughter all set up in the morning, between unhooking her fish, putting a new worm on, and casting her pole back out, and watching her bobber for her, I put a jig head and small grub on the shorter rod with the Omega 2, and I put a small beetle spin on a 6' rod with a cheep Pfluger 4410CX reel and new 4lb mono. Between helping my daughter with her fish, I would swap between the two setups. I had intentionally set the new reel up with the more difficult combination. I could not cast quite as far with the Omega 2 setup, but that was to be expected given the shorter rod, heavier line, and lighter tackle, but I was surprised by just how far I could cast it. The retrieves blew me away! They were silky smooth. When I got a hit, it felt like I hit a ROCK! I could feel every bump along the way. Drag adjustments were in small increments and were very repeatable. I had no problems setting it up. At the end of the day, my daughter and I had put about 15 nice bluegill each in the basket, and she had a blast doing it (wich was the main goal for the day). After getting home, getting the fish cleaned, and everything put away, I pulled a cheaper, problematic reel off one of my 6' ultra light rods, and put the Omega 2 in its place. I can't wait to get it out and fish with it some more. Now I just need to get 3 or 4 more!
Review: Nice reel, smooth as silk - I bought this as a replacement for a couple of older reels that had just worn out over many years of use, and I'm glad I did. I'd used Zebco (and other brands) of spincast reels for years and prefer tham to spinning reels for their simplicity and tendency to NOT get birds nests of tangled line. I was a little surprised at the current price of some spincast reels, as they used to be very inexpensive, but the quality and finish is far superior to the older, cheaper ones and the bearings are far better. It also comes with a spare spool so you can easily have a second type of line available to switch to if needed. I used this almost immediately at Steamboat Lake, in Colorado, fishing for rainbow trout. The lake is known for decent sized fish, and we were lucky enough to tie into a few, as well as some smaller, 12 to 14 inch ones. The reel performed flawlessly with long, smooth casts even with lighter lures, it cranked in quietly and quickly, and the drag was convenient and easy to adjust even as a fish was on the line. It was perfect for casting from shore and for trolling from a boat, part of the versatility of this type of reel, and I never once had to fuss with it for anything. I don't get to fish as much as I used to, nor do I hike & fish miles of rocky riverbank with occasional falls or tumbles as I once did, so this reel should last me the rest of my life. I'll probably pick up another just so that when I'm far from home or car I'll have a backup available - or to loan to my fishing buddy when his spinning reel goes haywire, again...

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Anybody use this for crappie fishing? If so, how did it do? Thanks!**
A: I am very pleased with the performance of my Z03 reel. My main use of it is medium/ heavey fresh water fishing. I am certain that it would work well for crappie, but I would spool it with lighter weight line. Maybe you should take a look at the Z02 or 33 model Zebco reels if you would like a more compact reel.

**Q: Is the Z02 the same size as a common zebco 33, or same size as a zebco micro 11, or somewhere in-between?**
A: The size is in between Zebco 33 and Micro 11. It is about as heavy as the 33.

**Q: What is the weight of the line that comes on this?**
A: 6lb test, Zebco red Cajun line. Not sure what problem others have but I have been fishing with the same z02 for 2 years now, pulled in many crappie, bream and some nice bass. Both z02 and z03 have been great. Crank baits, plastics and other lures work fine.

**Q: Are the gears metal or plastic?**
A: Metal gears. very nice reel and have used it to bring in a 4.5 lb trout and a 12 lb cat fish. Loved the reel I bought a second.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great product with one exception
*by S***R on January 18, 2026*

The best spin cast reel on the market. I own four and may buy another. The handle may come unscrewed during use however. I suggest you apply blue Loctite before you use it the first time. My handle came off during use and became mangled and bent. I will need to buy a replacement part.
