History, legends and facts from Canada to thePatagonia
Great book to learn new things about America. History, legends, facts, all in one book without having to read thousands of books. Good overview from Canada to the Patagonia, pre Colombian to the beggining of the Spanish empire decay. Out of this book I picked the Incas as the next civilization to read about.

Highest recommendation. Urgent must-read.
Galeano’s writing is gorgeous. Every page is like a new beautiful painting done in words. The story is compelling, gripping, and— in North America — largely unknown yet vitally important.

Many little snapshots of life as it was and as it was reported/recorded at the time. So much I never knew. Little wonder most of this was never taught in school. Sobering.

Read "Football (soccer) in Sun and Shadow", instead
This book is nothing more than a series of short vignettes, most of which are not terribly interesting. His classic on football (world football, that is) is very entertaining. Sadly, this book is not.

absolutely unique
One of the most surprising, original and beautifully written books I have ever read, somewhere between history and poetry. I love this book and it has invariably deeply affected and surprised everyone I have recommended it to. Read this book!

A wide scope of story
Part 1 (Myths):I really enjoyed these myths. Starting with the beginning of time, earth and man, these myths build to the creation of various flora, fauna and human traits over time; from "the creation" to the dreams/premonitions of "men wearing clothes".Part 2 (Old New World)The scope of this work is amazing. Throughout this telling, the myths and legends of all the peoples involved, including the Europeans is interwoven and present. It sometimes gives a surreal feeling to the stories being told. This really is a book with a huge scope. The stories tell of heartache, suffering, traitors, saints, sinners, treachery.I'm looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.

Genesis Genius
Another fine book from Galeano. His writing always make me feel the history that we've all missed. He wrote small succinct paragraphs that transport one to unimaginable history. Such loving detail about such horrible acts. I only wish that I had started reading him many years ago.He died recently but we still have his books to learn from. I plan to read all of them, slowly, savouring his art.
