Review: Excellent metallics - I already owned the Kuretake "Starry Colors" set when I ordered this one...and honestly only ordered this Komorebi set because I caught it on sale and because it has a broader range of colors than the name brand set I already own and love. I didn't have very high expectations from what I judged to be perhaps a generic knock-off product. Actually, these paints are very very similar to the name brand product. They are full pans!! Pans are removable from the cardboard packaging if you want to put them into your own palette box. The paints themselves perform almost identically to the Kuretake paints. There is one gold in the Kuretake that is just hands down the best, most vivid and beautiful metallic watercolor gold out of the 2 dozen or so competitors I have personally tried, and it might be worth it to buy that set just for that particular paint; however, that set only contains 5 shades of gold and one white. If you are ok with just gold and white, the Kuretake paints are slightly better quality, but the differences are almost negligible. The Komorebi paints, which I am reviewing do contain a good gold, and have a much better range of metallic colors (not limited to just gold). So bottom line, if you want a superb set with several various metallic colors, then definitely buy this set. You won't be disappointed. These are much better than any store brand or any other generic watercolor paint I have tried. The paints lay down smooth, not clumpy nor chalky. They're exactly as they should be, and really amazing quality and amount of paint for this price!! These are actually better quality than some name brand metallics that cost more, but difficult to really compare sets with dozens of colors to this one that only has 6. This is a very budget friendly set, especially considering that they are full pan sized paints. They're very versatile in how you can use them: watercolor painting--obviously--but also can use them to apply truly brilliant effects in coloring book images that you can't get with metallic pencils. These can also be splattered onto mixed media, home made cards, or scrapbook layouts etc to give a unique, abstract shimmering accent.
Review: So pretty and vibrant! - So, even though shimmering shades aren't "true/traditional" watercolors, I can't help but love them. They can often be seriously opaque, which is one way they differ from standard colors, but when used to accent your painting, they can bring so much light and vibrancy to a composition. These particular paints are really lovely. They aren't glittery, they just have a fine mica sheen to them. For the most part, they also have a nice translucency (as long as you use a light hand) which is great. One thing I really love about them though is the size of the pans. I usually avoid pre-made pans in favor of making my own palette because I hate loading brushes in the tiny real estate of the half pan sizes you usually find. These are full pans, and for example, they are roomy enough to load a 1 inch flat brush if you were so inclined. The shades are all very pretty. I think the red is my favorite. The darker shades are a bit more opaque. I did sort of feel like there was something missing in the color range, but I can't really put my finger on what should have been excluded/included. Maybe the red and pink or the blue and purple are too similar? At any rate, it's not a big deal at all. I will try and find an example where I used them or else I can do some swatches, but even a photo fails to capture the shimmery fun! I definitely want to explore one of the bigger watercolor paint collections from MozArt.

**Q: The photos show half pan in some & full in others as, which would I receive?**
A: Recommend starting with half pans.

**Q: How much use do you get out of an individual color? I know they are watercolors but the individual containers look quite shallow.**
A: I think they are quite generous. They are about the size of a full pan in watercolor standards, and that is a larger quantity than the half pans  I usually use, which last for a long time. Remember that a small bit of water from the brush wets the cake, releasing the color. When you are finished, it will dry out, leaving most of the cake, to be rewet repeatedly.

**Q: Does this still have the odor, in this “new formulation” set?**
A: Hi! The new Komorebi 40 has now improved the formula. The odor has already been eliminated.
