Great Resource Book
Not sure you can love a school book but it is a great resource book. The book was in excellent condition. It arrived on time which was important because I had already started the class and needed it quickly.

Everything you need to know about lighting.
Lighting is the unglamorous, often-ignored aspect of interior design, which is a shame because it is SO important. Sometimes lighting can make all the difference in a room and the best furniture/textiles/accessories won't shine in a room with bad lighting. Gary Gordon's Interior Lighting for Designers is now in its fifth addition, which shows how quality this book is. I've used previous additions and found them invaluable for creating pleasing lighting schemes and the fifth addition includes some excellent updates to make the whole thing a must-have.You might not think that there is much to lighting, but you would be totally wrong. Lighting is actually vital to our health and mental well-being, which is why a poorly-lit room can make us feel uncomfortable and unhappy. This book covers every aspect of lighting: Lighting perception, light and your health, the psychology of light, color tones, daylighting, types of lighting, light control, sustainable lighting and methods. To help drive all of these points home, the book includes tons of pictures, both b/w and color and tons of illustrations and graphics. A book about light has to have good illustrations (since sometimes you have to show the concept rather than describe it) and this one does. It is also firmly based in the latest information and data, so you know you are getting the best information you can. This book doesn't just tackle electric lighting - which sets it apart from some lighting books - it also includes natural lighting and ways to control it, such as blinds, shutters, awnings and the like. I also love that the book gets really into he different type of lamps, including shapes, fittings, voltage, etc.The book is broken down in a sensible manner, and though it is aimed at students, it is perfect for any designer looking for all the best info on lighting for design. I found the section on controlling the direction of lighting particularly useful, since some books give you information on light levels and requirements but don't really explore how that lighting might bounce around a room. That meant that sometimes you pick all the "right" lighting, only to find that it somehow just doesn't illuminate the room like you expected. Knowing how light is going to reflect in a room is essential, since light doesn't behave the same in every situation. The updated section on sustainable design was particularly useful, since most new construction projects want to have sustainable lighting (and many people remodeling want smarter technology) and the chapter includes useful information that can be used in new builds, remodels or even just in a home.Whether your instructor tells you to pick this up or you are a professional designer, this book has all the info you need and is an excellent, reliable resource.

some interesting information but not easy to distill
i liked the idea of this book but thought the information about light could be presented in a more interesting and more easily understood way. the pictures appear dated making it less relevant to the world i am interested in. not enough information about LED lighting options and innovative ways it is now being used.

Everything you wanted to know about lighting
As a photographer, I have a significant interest in lighting. This book is mainly for designers, but its information goes beyond the calculations needed for design (which is also in the book) and breaks down how different types of lighting affects how we feel, which is important to anyone taking photos. One of the best passages in the book, in my opinion, is that "lighting design never begins with the lighting fixtures, it always begins by determining which surfaces and objects you want to light and then working backward toward the solution". This applies to everything from lighting design for a workplace to taking a photo of your dog.The book also has tons of information related to the technical side of lighting. The book has a full section related to illuminance calculations, ceiling design (which explains why lighting pros are also ceiling designers), technical discussions related to certain types of lighting, and much more. While there are sections of this book that go beyond what you may need to know for photography or deciding how to light rooms in your home, I would still recommend reading all of it. For example, some of the illuminance calculations are mainly for professional designers, but there are still important tidbits related to how lighting in a large, low rooms differs from lighting a small, tall room.If you are interested in how our I eyes see light, how our brains interpret light, the different types of lighting, the best ways to light for different functions, and much more, this book is the one you want.

A well-written and readable textbook on interior lighting design
Interior Lighting for Designers is an amazing seminal guide to interior lightning design. It is an authoritative introduction to the principles of lightning and design process for interior architects and designers. It is comprehensive and well written like a textbook, and yet very readable. The guide explains the importance of the integrating lighting design with the overall interior design, and how lighting conditions have enormous emotional impact on people. Lightning is often the least aspect of an interior design that people would look at. They would consider how a light fixture would appear and fit in their grand design but often not how the lighting conditions would impact the overall mood and perception of the environment. In this textbook, the author walks through various design factors - perception and vision, light and health, psychology of light, patterns, color and measurement of light. In the next section, he introduces a wide variety of lighting technology - daylight, filament source, low and high intensity discharge sources and solid-state lighting. In the last section, he focuses on interior illumination and design process including light and lighting controls, sustainable design and design verification process. All in all, this is classic textbook on all things about interior lightning design. It is a great read whether you are an interior architect or designer, or a homeowner who wants to incorporate lightning design into a home remodeling project. You'll find a treasure trove of information that will be useful in your next projects.
