My hands are 9" around. But the L was just entirely too snug. The XL was what I had originally needed. The gloves are amazing. I've worn them in below freezing temperatures outside for extended hours (while moving). They do phenomenal. This is a glove you will want to wear on it's own. It's a very bulky glove, primarily because of the insulation. That being said, I can't imagine trying to fit SHELLS over these. If you are looking for a glove to wear inside SHELLS, this is not the glove you would line SHELLS with. But this is an exceptional glove to wear on its own in temperatures exceeding freezing.
