I've seen a lot of people put this lock on the top part of their door and I can tell you putting it on top doesn't offer much security if an intruder tries to kick down your door. The middle of the door is the center of where force is met when someone kicks in your door. If you put this lock on top of your door the pressure from the blows to the door will put more pressure to the top area and snap the bottom portion of your door. The force of the blow is in the middle and that's where the lock should be to take the blows. How do i know? because I experimented on two doors using this lock. I placed one on top of my door were I see people putting it and i put one in the middle of the door. I found that the lock adsorbed the blows when the reinforced lock was put in the middle. We kicked the door down as hard as we could, we hit it with a sludge hammer, and also used a crow bar and it did not budge. When we put the lock on top we found that the door frame broke off and the door snapped because the pressure of the kicks and sludge hammer had snapped the door in half breaking the bottom part of the door. It all has to do with physics. This lock is well constructed and easy to open and close. I will say this. It's good to oil up the lock hinge from time to time to avoid friction which will occur over time. Also use concrete screws when drilling these onto the door frame. The screws that come with this are cheap and will break off if anyone dares to kick your door down. Overall this is an easy to install lock and well worth the money. I feel safe at night knowing nobody can break down my door even if they tried. This if placed right will withstand 500 and more lbs of pressure. But the hydraulic tools fireman carry go up to 5000lbs. **Q: Does it only work when someone is inside?** A: I installed this on my front door. As others have said, you must be inside to lock it, and it cannot be locked or unlocked from the outside. So you have no access to the door from the outside when the lock is in place. I keep it locked all the time, even when I'm not home, because I go in and out through my back door. For extra safety and strength, I installed two of them on my front door, one about chest high and one about two feet from the floor. I did this because I have a glass panel on the top half of the door, so if a burglar breaks the window, the bottom blocker is out of reach. As extra security for my back door, I installed a security door (like a screen door except it's heavy gauge metal with its own handle lock and deadbolt).This door blocker is extremely well-made (heavy metal) and is a fantastic product. Is mine defective or is there a trick to opening it?** A: Sometimes you are right. I had one defective out of three I received. The spring was loaded improperly which made the latch always to be in the open. Or if I forced it, the spring would dislodge and make it difficult to even close. And once closed it would not open. Now if that is the case then you need replacement. However, if you are trying to understand how it works, all you have to do is when the latch lodged in the recess, basically in its closed position, pull out as if you are navigating around the latch notch that stops it. So the idea is pull laterally first and then turn the latch around the notch.
