    Jon Cryer is Hilarious

*by I***W on Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2024*

This book was a joy to read. I found it funny how he wrote a page at the beginning to warn readers of the salty language within. (He was right.) I learned so much about the actor I first saw (and adored) in “Pretty In Pink” decades ago. He has had such an interesting life. Who knew he had studied at the Royal Academy in London, or that he had dated Demi Moore? I truly enjoyed the book and recommend it. It’s a fun read. He is a very funny guy. I actually laughed out loud a few times while reading.

Duckie Dale was almost The Karate Kid, Mr Pink and Chandler Bing!

I first saw Pretty in Pink when I was seven and to this day it remains one of my favourite films of all time. Pretty in Pink (there is no use wasting good lip gloss, that is a volcanic ensemble, I don't want you to drive me home ...because I live by the tracks, I am off like a dirty shirt, I just want them to know they didn't break me, Blane that is not a name it's an electrical appliance and also gave us that important life lesson of never ever make your own prom dress) and The Godfather (keep your friends close and enemies closer, I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse, sleeping with the fishes, go to the mattresses, the horse's head in his bed, just when I think I am out they pull me back in) are indeed the sources of all wisdom (as Tom Hanks noted in You've Got Mail regarding Coppola's masterpiece).I was also Team Duckie as he really loved and understood Andie but I totally understand the argument that you want the girl to be able to get the guy she wants even though he drives a BMW and she lives by the tracks (I was able to cope with the revised ending by the fact that Blane was played by Andrew McCarthy, who was so pretty and sensitive, actually I loved all the cast so much I could've even handled Andie ending up with the villain of the piece Stef because James Spader was so beautiful and had such a commanding screen presence - if only real high school boys wore white linen Armani suits and Gucci loafers). Jon Cryer, I am that person all the way in Australia who paid good money (well my mother did) to see Morgan Stewart's Coming Home at the movies such was my by then eight year old devotion to the Duckman and I saw all the subsequent sitcoms that followed. However, I was a little bit worried about reading Jon Cryer's memoir as I didn't want my childhood memories of Duckie and my favourite film ruined by any salacious revelations (I have already had to block out Two and a Half Men, I get it actors have to put kids through college too). Would he sledge Molly Ringwald (a bit but he does acknowledge she was seventeen at the time and very talented), Andrew McCarthy (nothing too damning other than telling us what we all know that he had one terrible wig on at the end of Pretty in Pink), make fun of the film that was his big break (not really, phew) or would I have to hear Duckie talk about hookers (yes but only briefly and she provided financial advice and a good chat)?Thankfully what you get is a fun easy read with a likeable voice. A mistake celebrity autobiographies often make is banging on about their childhood at the beginning of the book so that you are bored to tears (keep it succinct and to the point like Cryer has here, unless your childhood was monumentally bad e.g. Tatum O'Neal, relevant say like Brooke Shields who was at her peak during this period of her life or well written and funny e.g. Penny Marshall's My Mother Was Nuts). Or they are too self-indulgent , thankfully Cryer has a self-deprecating charm. The other trap is that they don't name names as the author may want to work again (e.g. Jason Priestley's book, seriously he loved almost everybody), which can become a bit tedious (give us something to read people otherwise why are we bothering investing our time analysing your personal and professional life plus I want photos). Cryer doesn't come off as mean (well other than with the misunderstanding re poor Carol Channing and the monkey) but doesn't hold back either and thus delivers the reader with what they are after.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others. I am also looking forward to a Pretty in Pink 30th anniversary reunion next year, should be fun!

    A real page turner

*by W***K on Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2022*

I'll be the first to admit that as much as I loved the original cast of Two and a half men, I never ever watched anything that involved Jon, prior to the show. I never saw, or had the urge to see Pretty In Pink, (Hell, I even toured as the lighting designer for The Psychedelic Furs!) but you get the picture right? Not to say I had an issue with the guy, I just never really heard of him. Having said that, I do seem to remember mistakenly thinking he was the guy from Ferris Bueller's Day Off (another movie I never sat down and watched entirely) but having said all of the above, I downloaded a sample of the book and within minutes I was really enjoying it, so I bought it.And I'm happy to say I LOVED IT. Its well written and very funny most of the time. His life story through the ups and downs of his schooling, acting career, acting camp as a kid.. I could go on. I feel like I was hanging out with him as he was telling me stories over drinks. I have some of the same geek stories, although mind were rock and roll stories about my trying to be a musician, then when that didn't workout, a roadie, then after years of trying and failing to find my true talent, a professional stage lighting designer. But enough about me, Bottom line, this book is excellent, and have no fear about spending you money. Its an excellent read even if you were never a fan. Buy it now.But with all due respect to Jon and all involved in the making of Two And A Half Men, I never watched it again after Charlie got sacked. I've still never watched a single episode. In reruns, if I turn it on and see the other guy, I change the channel. Sorry, but I've wanted to tell Jon that ever since. And something tells me he reads these reviews 😋
