French Oak Infusion Spirals - Medium Toast

Good flavor and color for aging spirits. No chip mess is a bonus.

I’m concerned that the ones I received may have been contaminated with acetobacter. My wine turned to vinegar for the first time ever after using 2 in a 12% alcohol red wine. Not certain it was them but it’s the only thing I changed. Been making wine for 21 years.

Good balance between the wood sugars from high toast and the vanilla of the wood. Infuses a bit slower than the larger grains of the American Oak. Too wide to fit directly into wine bottles.

The spiral was great and the toast gauge was right on. Guess it was too much to expect the spiral to fit into the neck of a 750 ml bottle but worked great in a mason jar.

These french of spirals are the best. I use one stick per 3 gallon glass carboy at a time to enhance the oaky undertones and to add complexity to my homemade wine. I find that 3-4 weeks is the perfect balance of flavor and is my personal preference. I would recommend tasting daily after week 3 to find your preference. Much easier and more cost effective than a barrel!

One missing piece of info on these spirals in the online description. Each spiral is rated for only 3 gallons. They are small enough to slip into a 6 gal carboy so actually perfect for kit winemakers. Since I am using 30 and 78 gal tanks, it really would have been nice to know I needed 36 of these instead of the 10 I ordered. Now I hope Amazon will take them back. I have used spirals for years and it is a great way to go but purchased them from Vintners Vault in California. Their price for 6 is $80 plus shipping so this seemed like a deal. Of course their 6 will flavor 60 gallons versus the 18 by these little guys. Cheers!
