Better than BROTHER SUN, SISTER MOON
I had seen Zefferelli's film, BROTHER SUN, SISTER MOON long ago and was greatly disappointed in it. When I saw this, I thought it was a more recent attempt to tell the story of the saint. I was wrong. It is an older film but it was much more watchable.Francis was a young man of means from the Italian city of Assisi. He went away to war to seek his fortune but received instead a call from God to rebuild the church. At first, he took this as a specific command to rebuild a falling down local church and that he faithfully does, gathering a following of like minded people. In time, though, he realizes that the command was really to rebuild the institution of the church. This proves much more difficult. Francis is fought on all front by those who see him as a threat to their power. Ultimately, he is sabotaged by people within his own order. Even so, he stays faithful to his ideals.Like any film of this period, the historicity has it's problems but it is still a fair film. It is in no way stunning or memorable but it is worth watching if you are interested in such topics.

A movie to make St. Francis of Assisi followers proud?
Bradford Hillsman is usually noted for being the pain in the butt superior to "Dirty Harry" in the latter movies, he attempts to play St. Francis with much less conflict. His presence to me is not as effective as Graham Faulkner's in "Brother Sun Sister Moon." However, the latter film has less Hollywood ambiance and more scenery that appears realistic to the Assisi,Umbria area. Deloris Hart is another story. Of only two females to grace the "Elvis Movies" in repeat appearances she is very believable as St.Clair. Probably due to the fact that years later she ends up becoming a nun and an academy award nominee in 2012. Although it is highly possible that St. Clair was blonde as Hart portrayed her, due to the Northern Italian gene pool, this is not borne out by the viewing of her entombed body at the church that bears her name in Assisi.Due the fact that this is a late 50's creation, the technicolor DVD when placed into the Blue Ray Player allows for Blue Ray quality in picture viewing.

... me to know which has treated Francis of Assisi worse: The Church or the Movies
It is hard for me to know which has treated Francis of Assisi worse: The Church or the Movies. The Poor man of Assisi was a tough little guy. He not only walked the length and width of Italy several times he also walked to Egypt by way of Spain to convince the Sultan to allow Christians access to The Holy Land because he was aghast at the Pope's wars which killed people for this purpose. To Francis there could not be a worse desecration than spilling blood on the Holy Land to gain the Holy Land. He was not the ineffectual little man that talked to birds but a man of constant action. And, although, he had great respect for the state of Priesthood he knew he was dealing with human beings who were often more than less than good. And Francis' popularity made the Church very, very nervous. In the end both the Church and the Movies have used Francis as a cash cow. The best thing I can say about this movie is: It is not Zeffirelli's Brother Sun, Sister Moon (a title that is begging to be parodied). Based on a novel by Louis De Wohl (one of writers like Lloyd C Douglas and Thomas B Costain who wrote historical novels based on Christian subjects) the movie gives us a romantic triangle with Bradford Dillman (Francis), Stuart Whitman (Francis' competition for the hand of Clare) and Dolores Hart (Clare). Dillman manages to bring dignity to the part which is much to his credit and a testament to his abilities. (The walk to Egypt is reduced to a shot of Dillman walking in a desert which brings to mind Marlene Dietrich in the desert traipsing after Gary Cooper at the end of Morocco.) Whitman walks through his part looking as if his hat is on too tight and Delores Hart, I guess because this is a Michael Curtiz movie, seems to think she is Errol Flynn. (She recently came out of her convent to introduce some film at Film Forum in NYC.) Should this movie threaten to come to a theatre near you quietly tiptoe away.

Great movie!
I bought this movie like a mnoth ago and enjoyed it. Very inspiring, and time length goes by fast. It is an old movie but pretty good. It does show you how money was something he did not care for, but for helping others through poverty. He was born with a pure heart like we all do and nothing changed him becasue his choice in life even though his dad was opposed to it was to followed Gods way for he wanted to help always those in need. I hope that more humans now a days would watch more religious movies so they would value more the spiritual life versus being so greedy and materialistics. It is sad to see that most humans, at this moment, are getting worse on "what money can buy". Power and greed are so visible, that for us the good, is devasting to see how evil is trying to take over the world. We do need money to live, but we need more God than money so we can live in peace, harmony and love. Let's hope that through prayer we can bring harmony to the world.

Good story
A lovely story about a beautiful man who gave up all his wealth to help the the poor. His happiness was in helping others less fortunate. Their is not many like him in today's materialist world. A nice story about a saint

Good Interpretation of this Saint's Life.
While this film is not right up there with my favourites, I was quite happy with this interpretation of the life of St Francis of Assisi. In view of the fact that this movie was made more than fifty years ago, the clarity of the picture and of the sound was excellent. I was also impressed with the quality of the acting, particularly in the case of Stuart Whitman and Dolores Hart.
