Excellent read
A true and gripping story. A real eye-opener on what life is really like for African girls and women. Waris is a real inspiration with an amazing determination.

Lots of repetition of Desert Flower
Whilst Desert Flower is a book I'd recommend, I wouldn't say the same for Desert Dawn, mainly because it repeats almost verbatim various passages from Desert Flower. It does cover some new ground, but in my opinion not enough to warrant purchasing this book. The written English is also poor in places. Maybe if you'd read Desert Flower a long time ago and forgotten what happened, Desert Dawn would be good, or are reading Desert Dawn in isolation.

Deeply Moving Story
A detailed account of Waris’ return to her homeland and the pure joys of simple family ties for those in her clan. Sadly though family is paramount to Somali, backward traditions based on extreme gender equality threaten the very roots of this people and their culture. After reading her other books, this one helped me to in part fathom the thinking of a mother who would let her sweet daughter be mutilated so violently.Waris is a singular force of nature with unbridled courage, tenacity and love for her people. Namaste~

Desert Flower
A stunning book to read of traditions and customs at the expense of female persons. A real "eye opener" to what is going on in that culture. What an inspiration! Ms. Dirie is a remarkable and courageous person.
