Fright Night

This "Fright Night" movie remake is worthy of the original 1985 movie of the same name.
When I first heard of this movie remake I was a little skeptical, to say the least. The original 1985 version had one of the best British actors of all times, Roddy McDowall, playing the role of Peter Vincent. He brought an old Hollywood essence to the original and in my opinion helped to push that movie into its cult status. David Tennant (the second Dr. Who of the mid 2000s) would play the role of Peter Vincent in this version. Tennant's character was that of an attractive, 30's something man. The year the original had been filmed, Roddy McDowall was 57 years old. He looked and played well, the part of an older, broke, washed up actor who was barely hanging on to a career that should've been over years ago but somehow was able to keep his cheap and campy t.v. show by the name of "Fright Night". In the remake that was all changed. The new Peter Vincent was a successful British illusionists who resides in Las Vegas. The part of Charlie Brewster in this one is played by Anton Yelchin (RIP) and he nailed that part. William Ragsdale, who played the original Brewster, and played it well, had an almost sweet and innocent demeanor about himself. Yelchin's portrayal of the same character went deeper but in a subtle way. He was more cerebral and dare I say "sexier ?" Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays "Ed", who is Charlie Brewster's best friend from his childhood. In the original movie "Ed" was played by Stephen Geoffreys. No offense to Plasse, but Geoffreys' portrayal was somehow better. There's a very distinct difference in how the vampire character "Jerry Dandridge" is played by Colin Farrell in this film and how it was played by Chris Sarandon in the original. (Sarandon has a cameo in this remake which is delightful). Sarandon's character in the original version had a male companion and there were hints of homo-eroticism, whereas Farrell's character was much more masculine, dark and vicious. Imogene Poots ,who couldn't have been more perfectly casted, plays the part of Charlie's love interest "Amy". In the 1985 version, Amanda Bearse ( Marcy Darcy in Married With children) played the original Amy and did it very well. Toni Collette, one of my favorite actors, plays Brewster's mother. Collette brought something more to that character than the original actor Dorothy Fielding had and no offense to Fielding it's just that she had less screen time than Collette's version. There are marked differences in the two story lines but they don't conflict because this remake seems to be more of a continuation of the story than it does a remake, which is odd, but maybe that's because each version is played so well. In a short period of time this movie really grew on me. I very highly recommend this "Vampire Flick" remake!!

A superlative film... witty, intelligent and effortless charming
I loved the original Fright Night (1985) and owned it for years. Saw it for the first time in the early nineties. I wound up inadvertently giving the DVD away not that long ago, but it definitely held up over the years. I also found it scary as hell, Chris Sarandon was effortlessly sexy, and I really liked Charley, Amy, Evil Ed and even Charley's mom (played by the oft neglected Dorothy Fielding). The nightclub scene is classic. Now, on to the remake. I was really excited about seeing it because I loved the original story so much. Tom Holland is one of my favorite screenwriters and I always keep an eye out for anything of his. And I ended up loving the remake. I've gone back 5 times to see it in theaters, and I've never done that before in my life. There are some spoilers in the remainder of my review, so please don't read further if you haven't yet seen this film...____________________________________________________________________________________________I find this Fright Night incredibly funny and also scary at the same time. Maybe I scare easily, but so many scenes had me at the edge of my seat, starting with the beginning when Evil Ed visits Adam's house and we see Jerry lurking outside the door. The subsequent chase and Jerry turning Ed into a vampire scared the crap out of me. As did so many scenes thereafter - Charley's rescue of Doris, their escape from Jerry's house, the car chase scene (this one had me at the edge of my seat, clutching my friend who had gone with me to see it the 1st time!) - and I loved Chris Sarandon's cameo. That was awesome - one Jerry sinking his fangs into his predecessor. If only William Ragsdale had shown up in some capacity as well - as a disbelieving neighbor or policeman. Ah, well.I thought the scene between Jerry and Charley when Charley isn't inviting Jerry in (and Jerry's realization that Charley is deliberately stonewalling him) was incredible. Both Colin and Anton did a fantastic job. The analogous scene in the original (Jerry being invited in by Charley's mother) was also clever. But I enjoyed this scene more.I really enjoyed the comedic aspects. Colin mixed humor and menace very effectively. I loved the way he paid homage to Chris's Jerry by angrily biting into an apple the first time when Charley goes off to meet Ed at Adam's house, and amusingly biting into an apple a second time when Charley and Doris escape his house. My favorite line: when Charley says "Jerry? That's a TERRIBLE vampire name - JERRY?", Ed counters: "I didn't name him, man. I'm just reporting the FACTS." Christopher Mintz-Plasse delivered that line perfectly. It's a priceless moment.I found Colin Farrell incredibly sexy and I've become a fan of his for life. No one else could've pulled off the role of Jerry the vampire the way he did. He is truly in his element. Perhaps best of all, the entire cast seems to having a riotously good time here. Overall - as a true lover of the original Fright Night (one of my favorite movies ever!) - I loved, loved, loved the remake. Every time I watch it, I discover another subtlety that I didn't catch earlier. I like this version of Fright Night better, but for emotional reasons that I can't fully verbalize. I can't wait for the DVD to come out!

Fright Night - DVD 2011
Can a horror remake actually be a good for a change? I mean, how many classic horror flicks does Hollywood have to crap on until they finally give up? "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Amityville Horror", "Nightmare on Elm St.", "Friday the 13th", "House of Wax".......all of these films are examples of why i sometimes HATE Hollywood.Finally......a horror remake that's WORTH seeing. I must admit, i had some pretty low expectations walking into this, and it did way more than prove me wrong. Initially i thought they were going to make this a straight 'B' movie by incorporating tons of humor with their gore, which would have been fine with me, seeing that i love the genre'. But this movie was more fun than funny. Don't get me wrong, there are some sequences that are funny, but it had more of that 'drive-in' appeal to it's horror. And i loved every bit of it.It's story is pretty basic, and somewhat cliché'. I mean come on, a vampire living next door. But the weird thing is, it didn't come off as cliché'. And i think the biggest contribution to that was the pace of the film. Once you get past the first 10 to 15 minutes of the film, which are kind of dull, the movie quickly begins to morph into a fast paced gore fest. And now looking back on it......if it were not rated R, then this movie would have been stupid, and it would've fit in with every other crummy horror remake. But the aspect that i appreciated the most was the writing. For once, they didn't alter any rules to make their film different. They stuck with what already works, and left it up to the actors to make these vampire rules entertaining. And Collin Farrell did just that.Bottom Line.....Of all the horror movies that come out this year, this will probably be the one you will have the most fun at. It's funny, it's somewhat scary, but most of all, it's pretty damn entertaining. It's one of those movies i would've loved to of seen at the drive-in. If your tired of all this 'Twilight' crap, which they happen to mention in the movie itself, then this is really a breathe of fresh air to all the TRUE vampire fans.

Remake aceptable
Está muy bien éste remake, mantiene los nombres de los personajes originales y cambia ciertas partes, es muy entretenida. Ésta edición incluye CD+DVD y la copia digital que al ser España no se puede descargar porque es para Italia. Contiene muchos extras.
