The Grissim Buyer's Guide to Manufactured Homes & Land: How to Find a Reputable Dealer and Negotiate a Fair Price on the Best Kept Secret in American Housing

Essential guide - spend $20 bucks now, save $50K later
Everyone who is thinking about buying a manufactured/modular/mobile home needs to read this if only for the comprehensive breakdown of each element of building and design and what it means in terms of quality. For example, the chart will tell you that better built homes have a higher roof insulation rating than less quality built homes. You may already know that, but you might not be aware of how to rate cabinets, rugs, electrical outlets, etc. This book clues you in to what you need to know about the house you are purchasing and what your money is being spent on. You don't want a rug put in with staples, heat registers in the middle of the rooms, etc. But, just as important, this book describes the process and pitfalls. For example, a dealer may emphasize monthly payments, but charge you obscenely high interest later on. It's all explained very well in a conversational manner. Thanks, Mr. Grissim, for putting all this information together!

There are better guides.
I've bought and read four different books on manufactured home purchasing and just recently purchased and moved into my own mobile home. With that experience, I think "Buying a Manufactured Home" by Burnside& Bentley is probably your best overall guide, Although none of the books are 5 star quality, it has a more easily read format, and with better checklists of things to do, and not do, features to have and avoid, etc. This book is more of an overview of the subject and industry, with few checklists and it's not as easy to later refer to important info.

Shop with confidence after reading this book
Very informative book. As others have mentioned the material is dated but in general I found it still to be very accurate. It definitely gives you the knowledge to shop for a manufactured home with confidence. He does a good job of explaining how a manufactured home dealership is structured, what red flags to look out for and what to look for in a good quality manufactured home.

Needs updating to be current for today's mfg home buyers
Good information for gaining basic knowledge of manufactured homes. I knew nothing at all about them when I bought this book. Would be nice if Mr. Grissim would update and publish this as a more current guide.

I really enjoyed the side stories telling odd facts
Grissim's buyers guide is the defacto standard on how to buy a manufactured home. Witty and chock full of personal stories, anyone looking to buy an MH NEEDS to first read this book. I really enjoyed the side stories telling odd facts.
