I found Ram mounts a few years ago and love them. Just purchased a couple more pieces
I found Ram mounts a few years ago and love them. Just purchased a couple more pieces, so my review is copy and pasted from my updated review from a previous purchase.RAM mounts are still the best mount I've found. Not going to find anything better. Very simple design that's brilliantly executed. I've never been satisfied with other options such as suction cups or double sided tape mounts. They'll all fail at some point. Then a few years ago I discovered Ram mounts. Made my first purchase and I couldn't have been happier. I've now purchased multiples of the 1" ball for camera mounting over the years for various applications. My most current usage was to mount a 6" cell phone on the dash of a 2012 Camry for Pandora/Google Maps. I wanted something secure and adjustable, yet easy to remove. Ram fits the bill. For this setup, I used the following products (I'll supply links at the end):Ram Mount 1-Inch Ball with 1/4-Inch 20 Male Threaded Post for CamerasRam Mount 2 x 1.7 Inches Base with 1-Inch BallRam Mount Composite Short Double Socket Arm for 1-Inch BallPart of a Vastar Universal Smartphone Tripod Adapter3/4" Phone and Fax Plastic GrommetLuckily enough, my Camry has a large section of trim around the clock on the dash. The whole thing comes out very easily. I removed the trim piece and disconnected the clock from it. Marked out my holes for the 2" x 1.7" Ram mounting plate. I mounted the base plate with black bolts to blend in with everything. I also sandwiched a small piece of black rubber shelf liner to eliminate any possible squeaking. Whilst the dash is fairly flat where I mounted it there is a very slight curve. The 1" ball mount for cameras get attached to the upper part of the Vastar Universal Smartphone Tripod Adapter, the short composite Ram arm connects it all together. I also drilled another hole in the clock trim piece to run a USB cable in-dash behind the radio. I used the 3/4" phone/fax grommet to finish it off and give a professional look.I couldn't be more happy with how this turned out. It's very easy to use and it's something that can be quickly removed if I don't want to leave it in the car. The only thing that stays behind is the mounting plate that's bolted to the dash and the USB cable. I think car's should come with something similar to this. It's not far from eye level yet doesn't block my view.Product links:Ram Mount 1-Inch Ball with 1/4-Inch 20 Male Threaded Post for CamerasRam Mount 1-Inch Ball with 1/4-Inch 20 Male Threaded Post for CamerasRam Mount 2 x 1.7 Inches Base with 1-Inch BallRam Mount 2 x 1.7 Inches Base with 1-Inch Ball that Contains the Universal AMPs Hole Pattern for the Garmin zumo/TomTom Rider/Urban Rider (Discontinued by Manufacturer)Ram Mount Composite Short Double Socket Arm for 1-Inch BallRam Mount Composite Short Double Socket Arm for 1-Inch Ball BasesThe jaw part of the Vastar Universal Smartphone Tripod AdapterVastar Universal Smartphone Tripod Adapter Cell Phone Holder Mount Adapter, Fits iPhone, Samsung, and all Phones, Rotates Vertical and Horizontal, Adjustable Clamp3/4" Phone and Fax Plastic Grommet3/4" Phone and Fax Plastic Grommet - Color: Black - 10 Pieces

High quality mounting gear
I purchased this along with the medium double socket arm and the Universal X-Grip Holder. As I am using this as a part of a system, I will commenton the overall package as the parts are all of the same high quality and would be useless alone.Although I've only had it installed for a day, I could not be any more pleased. For reference, this is mounted on the dash of my 2003 Jeep Wrangler. After going through countless cheap (under $5) car holders, mounts, etc., I finally had enough after purchasing an iOttie mount for around $15 only to have it break after 6 months of usage. Sure, it is plastic, and $15 isn't a lot of money in the big picture, but I need more than 6 months from a product.I looked into several different mounting options including custom mounts, and fortunately came across RAM products. I read the reviews, looked into the company itself, and quickly ordered a solution that seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. I am happy to say so far, I made the right decision.I mounted the base to the center area of my Wrangler's dash, in a place that is covered by a removable rubber mat, and the screw holes can easily be covered up if someone decided to remove the mount for some reason (likely me, in order to keep it for my next vehicle!). This lets me angle the rest of the mount above the radio and vent, which I find to be the best location for navigation and music control. The X-Grip connects to the socket arm and can be adjusted to almost any position. The X-Grip, if centered, does hit the volume/power buttons of my Nexus 4 if centered, but I find that positioning it to either side still provides an extremely secure grip and avoids hitting the buttons.I obviously cannot speak to durability, but all 3 of the parts that I ordered appear to use high quality metals and plastics. The points that would be prone to failure due to sun/heat are sturdy enough that I will be amazed if it breaks, and considering RAM Mount's reputation I have a feeling I shouldn't worry. I will certainly come back and edit my review should that happen, but I trust RAM would take care of me even in the eventAll said, I spent around $40 for the 3 pieces. I have probably spent that much in cheap plastic mounts in the past 3 years. I have no doubt that I could easily be using this 15 years down the road. Past the 15 year point, we will probably have all of our gadgets implanted in our brains, but I bet the plastic in this mount will still be solid!

LOVE the RAM Mount System
I am so glad I found the RAM Mount stuff on Amazon. My aim was to mount my iPad Mini in the hole where the factory nav system would go in my 350z. Number 1 priority was for it never be possible for the iPad to fall out and get damaged, so no suction cup nonsense.I bought this base, and the diamond base. Picked up 2 inch and 3 inch double ball socket, and an iPad Mini-specific cradle. The iPad fits securely in the cradle - no way it will come out. The square base was screwed into the back of the nav hole, and the diamond one is attached to the cradle.I was concerned about the double socket pieces, mostly about durability of the twist knob that you tighten down on the balls with. It actually has a quality feel, and is fairly easy to grip. You can tighten it enough to where it won't move, but you can adjust it by moving with with your hand. When I saw how well it worked with the iPad, I got a RAM cradle for my iPhone 6s, so I could use the phone there if I don't want to cart the iPad around with me. I also picked up a tripod ball adapter, so I can use my iPhone 4 (which has a tripod adapter). So, this one mount opened up a way to mount three different devices quickly and securely with different adapter pieces. And it's easy to pop out the device, and hide it or take it with you.

Does what it says...
Not a whole lot to it. It works great for mounting RAM components that require a 1" ball. The hole pattern lines up with the AMPS pattern on my ProClip mount that is installed in my 2010 F150. I am using this in conjunction with the RAM long double socket arm, and the RAM universal X-Grip cradle on the phone end. This combo of components provides a lot of flexibility in positioning my phone, and seems to hold everything very securely. No complaints.
