I've decided to purchase a Miele Cat and Dog vacuum, but is it really worth the extra $400 just to get the canister model?

I had same question, but I bought it and I'm happy. The number one thing l hate about housekeeping is hauling around a vacuum. It tires me out more than any other thing. This is the first one that really zips around without getting hung up on everything. You hardly notice it's there. The cleaning performance is exceptional and it's built like a tank. I love it.

What is it about this vacuum that justifies the cost?

I am from Germany and my parents had one Miele vacuum growing up, for about 15 years, before they went for an upgrade.  They are very powerful and high quality. They are mostly still made in Germany, which is known for its high quality products, one reason being due to the organisation Stiftung Warentest (foundation product test). Stiftung Warentest plays an important role in two main areas. On the one hand it has the task of comparing objective aspects such as usefulness, functionality and environmental impact, and on the other hand it has the mission of educating consumers so they can learn how to make best use of the income available to them and behave in a health promoting and environmentally aware way. Due to its very well known and established reputation as an independent and reliable organization, the foundation has a considerable influence on the buying behavior of consumers.
Hence,  companies try to make top quality products, one of them being the well known brand Miele. It's probably the top rated vaccuum in Germany. 
It is pricey,  probably 2 to 3 times more than in Germany, I guess because it is being imported...
With that being said,  in my opinion no American brand compares to the performance of a Miele vaccuum. 
My sister-in- law has a Dyson and although it is powerful, she has already had to replace it 2 times in the last 5 years!!! And they aren't cheap either. So in the long run the Miele is worth the cost!

What is the difference between the c3 miele complete marin canister vacuum and the complete c3 cat and dog canister?
