Great shaving experience
I switched from a regular 3 blade shaver and I can confidently say that this will be my go to for the rest of my life. I used to get a lot of redness and ingrown hairs, not with this. I don't know how or why that is but I get a lot less irritation from this old school shaver. Would highly recommend to anyone. Blades cost a fraction too so in a long run you will be saving money too. I don't see any negatives. Only positives.

Perfectly Balanced - Smooth Shave
Already owned a 15C, but find the longer handle much more comfortable to hold and easier to handle because the balance is better. Find the closed blade give the smoothest of daily shaves but would return to the open comb on the 15C if i was dealing with a few days growth.

A mild, forgiving DE razor that's easy to control
I came to this razor after using the Wilkinson Sword Classic DE for a month or so (the chrome one, not the "plastic fantastic"), and a long line of cartridge razors for thirty-odd years prior to that. The Merkur 23C is one of the cheaper options among the mid-priced mild DE razors offered by Edwin Jagger, Muhle and indeed Merkur. I agonised over the choices available, pouring over every review I could find. In the end my desire for a longer handle and 3-piece design (separate handle, base plate and cap) together with its huge popularity swung things in favour of the 23C. Blade loading is easy and I haven't experienced any alignment problems with the blades I've used (Shark, Derby, Wilkinson, Silver Star). I haven't missed the twist-to-open (TTO) convenience of the Wilkinson at all. Another thing I haven't missed is the neck irritation that I consistently experienced with cartridges and even the Wilkinson; that was gone with my first shave with the Merkur. Previously I'd assumed that my skin was sensitive and I needed smoother blades like the Shark and Derby Extra, but in the Merkur sharper just means more efficient and irritation is never a problem. Part of this is down to the head design, but I think the Merkur's long, slender handle plays its part too; it encourages a delicate, balanced grip which results in precise control. The knurling on the handle prevents slippage even with soapy fingers. Good points: - Very forgiving; you have to get really sloppy to cut yourself with this razor. - The long slender grippy handle and slimline head make for a razor that is very easy to manoeuvre, even under the nose. - Irritation-free shave at long last, regardless of blade! - No blade alignment issues. Bad points: - Very mild, maybe too mild. The Derby Extra and Shark Blades that I'd been using with my previous DE razor are now going unused and I've had to order more Silver Stars which are substantially sharper. - Like EJ and Muhle, Merkur makes its heads from rigid but brittle chrome-plated Zamak (zinc alloy). All these razors share the same weak point: the screw thread on the underside of the cap. If the razor is dropped, or the handle is over-tightened, or the chrome plating is compromised through heavy use, then screw thread is liable to break off the cap.

Good quality but very soft shave
Good quality razor with good weight balance. As safety razors go this has to be the safest i've used, you can even shave against the growth without cutting your skin. I'm using Treet blades, which might be a bit tame for use with this model of Merkur so might try some others to see if can get a harsher cut.

Absolutely fantastic razor
Smooth, accurate, a delight to use and of course no plastic! Given to my son as his first razor and he could not have been more delighted.

Great razor for women
Great razor, legs stayed smooth for a few extra days than with a plastic female razor. No cuts, easy to use, just make sure to use a shaving soap/cream/something.

Quality
Bought a few for mates and own this razor myself, well constructed with a a great finish. Delivers a mild shave, works well with Wilkinson sword and Astra blades.

Perfect
I love this razor, this is in fact the second I have bought as I got it for my sister in law who is also loving perfectly smooth legs and no longer polluting the planet or being forced into paying yet more pink taxes! I nick myself even less than I used to and one big pack of blades seems to last forever Best Buy of my year!

A friend encouraged me to grow lamb chops in my sophomore year (‘71) after I complained about shaving. I used the DE butterfly razor Dad got for me where once or twice a week it wreaked havoc on my zit covered face. I’m not entirely sure whether the razor was open comb, or the blade itself was combed for safety. That meat-hammered face look was nothing to be embarrassed about back then as half the boys in class had crater faces. Those handsome senior year book photos? Air brushed. Entering the workforce about 1977, daily shaving was required along with suit and tie where I was forever commuting with 3-4 pieces of TP to patch up the wounds. I should have joined a ‘styptic pencil of the month club’. About that time, I tried the Gillette Trac II and finally settled on the plus model which added a lubricant strip, along with Edge Gel Aloe Vera Sensitive shave cream. Finally I began to get a decent shave with less blood letting. That’s been my shave for nearly 50 years, made more affordable by cheap cartridge refills in packages of 100. Thankfully, the suit and shave requirement was retired in the late 80’s when I went into IT – tech support is supposed to look casual and nerdy. Shaving just twice a week on average, there’s times I simply wait too long and the Trac II plus isn’t up to it, so I bought an electric razor YUCK! and finally a Weishi DE butterfly razor in short and long handle. My big hands hate the short handle, but the long handle gave me a decent 1 pass shave in like 2 minutes with an occasional nick if I cut the corners or wasn’t careful in setting it on my ugly mug. But I don’t get the feeling of quality from the Weishi and hate the gunmetal finish which looks dirty all the time. So I started watching YT shaving videos to find something better! Who knew there were so many shaving fetishists! Unable to spend more than 40 clams on a razor, brought me to the Muhle, Parker and Viking lines – where I ruled out anything with short handles, odd colors and matte/rustic finish. Adjustable razors all seem to be short handle so they’re out. My peculiars finally brought me to the Merkur 23c where I’m using Parker blades left over from the Weishi. I’m frankly shocked that it has yet to give me even a hint of a nick or cut. The shave is close enough for someone who hates to shave. Mine is a squirrely beard with grain going in several directions – which means the 23c requires several passes to get it smooth enough for my liking, especially the corners of the mouth, tip of the chin, jaw line and neck. It’s a smooth shave where the grain is straight and regular. On the recommendation of Frank below, I’m going to pick up a 25c for a more aggressive shave – where I hope that the Trac II plus, Merkur 23c and 25c will finally help me loathe shaving a little less. The price is right for a quality product.
