It has been some years since I last used a folding spade. It was on a military exercise on Salisbury Plain and, having now turned 70, I have no immediate plans to relive the experience. Nevertheless, an ongoing gardening problem has led to this purchase.We have a number of large plastic compost bins in the garden which are regularly topped up with kitchen/garden waste and horse manure. After having introduced compost worms over 2 years ago, we now have some of the finest compost known to gardeners. Getting at it, however, is another story!!!Basically, the good stuff is found at the bottom and the new stuff is on top. Each bin has a ground level access hatch (about 36 x 12 in) and this ‘L’ shaped spade is the ideal tool for dragging the manure out so that it can be used.I appreciate my use for the tool is very specific but, if other gardeners think about it I am sure they could put it to equally good use and it is a very strong, well made tool.NM

How is this thing alive. Really good product for the price, was put through its paces. It hacked through a mile of dense forest, cut down maybe 4 trees, started a fire, and dug a deep fire pit. The shovel edge doesn’t have a mark or dent. Honestly is really high quality, i was dubious due to the price but we really put it through it’s paces. People saying it won’t keep you alive as a survival tool; we tried it and it did.

Being a multi-function tool I didn't expect this to be as solid as it is. It is made of some really strong steel and is very sturdy indeed. When you fold it out to use I love the steel lock that you screw up to keep it in place as that is a really good design and the shovel won't just fold back in, like some cheap brands I've had in the past. If you are buying this purely as a foldaway / portable camping shovel then this is excellent for that, and it also extends out so you can have it at 3 different lengths, and that's what makes this a really good shovel.Some of the other functions are also quite handy but a few do seem a bit gimmicky, such as the whistle. I can see the knife extension and screwdriver coming in really handy but I don't think it would be any good as a saw as you don't have enough length on it to move forward and backward enough to do any serious sawing. Also the side of the shovel which is supposed to be used as an axe doesn't seem sharp enough or strong enough for any serious cutting.Overall I would say this a great product, really well made and designed and good value for money. It can get you out of a tricky situation when out camping due to it's many functions, but there is definitely some room for improvement. Some additional attachments, like the knife that comes with it would be a welcome addition as there is still plenty of room to store them in the handle, and I wouldn't even mind paying for them if they were made available.

I can't tell you what a saviour this was on its first camping trip. I didn't realise how multi functional it was, I thought I was just buying a spade!My friend was supposed to bring firewood to the camping spot, and when she severely underestimated how much we'd need, we went to gather more, most too long to fit into the fire place. I knew that this spade had a little serration on its side, so I brought it out and discover THE OTHER SIDE IS LIKE AN AXE! It kept our fire roaring well into the wee hours of the morning, and it was like Christmas morning finding the other little knife attachment, whistle, screw heads, ect. It really was the MVP of that trip and I'm never going camping without it.

Didn't know what to expect for £18 but wow.. quality made shovel. Love all the attachments, fits well together. Strong and sturdy. Small and compact when disassembled and a great size when assembled. Sharp shovel. Only negatives i can say would be the whistle, I can whistle louder. And theirs no handle. Would be great if it had a handle for more pressure during digging. Apart from those two.. I highly recommend it.

The shovel arrived the day after I ordered it. Excellent service from Amazon. The shovel was packaged in a small box and once I assembled it I found it was very secure and sturdy and was a very good price for a well made item. However I had to return it as the blades on the sides of the shovels were far too sharp for me and I know I will cut my leg if I use it as an actual shovel because I’m quite clumsy, so I will buy a normal small shovel which will be safer for me to use. This shovel is an excellent multipurpose tool, but it’s also potentially very dangerous if used by children or clumsy people like me. Wonderful service from Amazon.

The designers have done well to combine quality and strength with portability. For extended time in the wild this tool would be very useful to have with you. The knife, whistle, firelighter and double ended screwdriver bit are all safely stored in the extension tubes that screw together firmly to make the shovel a practical length for digging. For carrying, the components are stored in two strong nylon holders that will protect your other camping gear from damage.

I dont even know why I bought something like this when allI wanted was a good shovel. But the pick adjustment saved me buying a pick. The shovel was really strong even though you have to screw the short ish handle together. So add the rest of the well built tools and compact bag. It now my favourite go to. It chops saws my wood. It's kept in my car for and low and behold I needed a screw driver and there it was.Taking it camping in the summer with my boy just to use the lighter. Its brilliant and not bad for the money. Welldone designers well done
