Review: I installed the Champion 7989 plugs in my 2007 Ford V Tech engine. They replaced the OEM Motorcraft, 2-piece/welded plugs. So far the plugs have performed well. The engine has maintained power and mileage levels observed with the original plugs. In addition to the frustration of replacing the original plugs at half their expected mileage life (50,000 miles vice projected 100,000 miles) to reduce possibility of breaking those plugs at the weld joint, the replacement effort also resulted in purchasing two different size spark plug sockets. The original Motorcraft plugs are a "non-standard" 9/16 inch, where the Champion plugs are the more "normal" 5/8 inch size. Obviously, I will only be using the 5/8 inch socket in the future. I hope the Champion plugs maintain their 0.045 spark gap. The original plugs had worn to over 0.062 gap. I do not know where the original plugs were manufactured; the Champions are listed as manufactured in Mexico, unfortunately.

This week I replaced that set with a new set of 7989's at 94,000 miles. Although the plugs are rated for 100,000 miles, I thought it would be wise to try to avoid problems. The 7989's did their job; none broke during removal. This isn't to say that they came out easily....they made a noise similar to the original plugs and I still used a lot of patience ( 1 / 4 turn forward...1/8 turn backwards ). The 7989's I removed did not show significant wear at the electrode, about half showed significant build up on the ground electrode shield. I also replaced the coils with the MSD Street Fires. I do notice the engine is a bit smoother at idle.

One Star? more like .0001 star. I replaced my spark plugs about 600 miles ago give or take from the motorcraft "2 piece" plugs (didn't break any off!). One evening on my way home I started to notice a sporadic misfire that got so bad that I barley limped it into the driveway. Codes pulled indicated cylinder 3 and 6 misfire. I removed the two coils from cylinder 3 and 6 and metered ohms on them to known good coils, coils were fine. Soon after I removed the spark plugs that have only been installed for less than a month and metered them for continuity as well. Both cylinder 3 and 6 plugs metered open while the others metered good continuity and equal across the board. The center electrode broke ON THE INSIDE OF THE SPARK PLUG! How are you going to sell this crap to people?! After a in depth search of the web this is disappointingly a common issue and on top of that champion spark plugs failing left and right for a wide range of issues on the 5.4l 3v. They are almost double the price of any other spark plugs made for the 5.4l 3v triton motor. I would never ever recommend these to anyone. I thought I could undermine the 5.4l 3v spark plug "breakoff" issue with these one piece pieces of junk. Don't even try it! I am putting motorcraft (p/n sp515) back into it. Use nickel based anti-seize on the threads and electrode extender and you will save yourself the headache of having any break off in future endeavors (if any ever break) and stop you from paying $150 for this garbage champion thinks matches up to Ford motorcraft parts. I will never use champion ever again, not even in my lawn mower. On a side note, I highly recommend that if you are doing a spark plug replacement evolution on your 5.4l 3v for the first time have the Lisle extractor tool handy just to be safe!
