This thinner is butyl glycol, which is an alcohol. Not all alcohols are the same. Do not expect this to perform like denatured alcohol, which is ethanol. Vallejo also makes thinner based propylene glycol, another alcohol similar to butyl glycol. Propylene glycol can be obtained cheaply and in large quantities. If you are feeling adventurous, you can try a propylene glycol anti freeze from the hardware store. Cry-Tek-100 is available at Lowes, for example. Anti freeze products may contain other ingredients that could potentially damage equipment.

What is the difference between the Vallejo airbrush flow improver and the airbrush paint cleaner? Should I use both?

Flow improved helps the airbrush last longer while using. The cleaner keeps the brush clean from paint debris. I advice you to use both!

Does this work well for thinning the vallejo 'model colors'? i'm not referring to the the 'model air' colors as i have no probelm with thinng those.

Yes-I have used it to thin both Model Color and Model Air. It will take quite a bit of thinning to be able to airbrush Model Color, but it will work. The ratio of thinner to paint needed varies from color to color, depending on thickness of the paint, so you’ll have to experiment.

Can the thinner work with gel?

If you are talking about in the airbrush, it should work. It has to be water based acrylics.
