So they are a little longer. **Q: How wide and thick is this collar?** A: 1" wide about 1/8" thick. Mine is already cracking after 6 months... **Q: Does it stay flexible in the cold?** A: I have not noticed any change in the flexibility whether it is hot or cold. We live in AZ, but travel to CO often with our dogs. Our dogs have been in temps ranging from 10 degrees to 115. Granted they live inside and go outside for short durations during extreme temperatures. **Q: After some advice please - my Border Collie's neck measures 17",so do I purchase a medium which should only just fit, or do I get the large? Thanks** A: Let me start by saying we love these collars and don't ever want to use anything else for our labs! Our larger chocolate lab wears the Large, and her neck is also right at 17", but we had to cut the end off because it would stick out since we had to put it on almost the last hole. Our smaller chocolate lab has a 16" neck, and she wears a medium and has plenty of room still. The Medium size more than fits our larger girl, and we should have replaced her Large, but we made it work. The sizing is accurate, so just use a tape measure to check your dog's neck size. The nylon collar we had before smelled terrible. This collar has solved that problem. I did leave it out to air for a bit after first receiving it, to get rid of the plastic smell, but since then it has been odor-free. The color is snazzy and the ring and buckle are sturdy.
