I bought placemats to do the exact opposite but these left discoloration marks in the shape of plates/bowls where we sat and used them with warm plates/bowls during mealtime. But... all the small holes make these annoying. The design is a fine mesh across the entire placemat, so liquid spills go right through, and then have to spray off each one in the sink, shake (because of all the holes), and hang or towel dry. And then you still have to wipe the liquid off the table or tablecloth also that was under these. Bottom line the only real benefit I get is heat protection but no spill protection.
