Durable and functional
Very straightforward product. Works great for shaping metals. It fits on any small surface so a great addition to a work area. Totally worth the money because this will last you forever if you take care of it. It’s a little more of a quarter inch thick.

flat square block of steel
It's not hardened (below 40 HRC) but it's square, even, and flat on top and bottom (cut a little rough but flat on the sides). For anything softer than mild steel it should be fine. WD-40 should prevent rust if necessary, it may be stainless (201?) but it will rust in damp conditions.
