Is there a voltage switch? Am i supposed to assume this is not going to overvolt and destroy my equipment?

I used this for my Lenovo Y700 and it severely UNDER powered my laptop that it was actually draining the battery even with it in, not worth the cheap money it cost in my opinion..

how does the tip control the amps?

The amps are controlled by the charger, the tips are just there to feed the exact same amps to various devices which have different end pin connector types. Very handy as you can us the same charger for a whole lot of different devices. But the issue is this charger does not do what the seller suggests or mentions in the description of this item
