Review: So glad I bought this... - I have a permanent lower retainer which I've had in my mouth for 10 years now. For the longest time, I was considering getting it removed because I hate how difficult it is to floss around it using the threaders and such. I looked around online long enough to realize that the risk of removing my retainer was that my teeth would revert back to their overcrowded, shark-like jaggedness. Anyway, I heard a lot of good things about this Waterpik as an easy and effective solution for flossing between and around permanent retainers, not to mention that it is very healthy for the gums so I gave it a shot. Let me tell you, I LOVE MY WATERPIK! I'm not sure how durable it is, as I've only had it for a few months, but it makes cleaning my gums an easy part of my daily routine instead of a chore (which is how I used to feel about it). The Waterpik seems like it is decent quality, and I would guess that it should last a little more than a year before it breaks. Time will tell, but if it lasts 10-12 months, I would still be satisfied. This product works very well and it was a savior for me as a solution to threading/flossing the frustrating permanent retainer in the bottom of my mouth. The water blasts/pulses are very powerful and you'll be amazed at the kind of gunk/food you'll see fall out of your mouth and into the sink. It is important to keep your lips semi-closed to prevent water from splashing all over the place. If you're not careful, this machine can be messy. Also, be careful not to move up to full power (level 10) too quickly because you might get a little bleeding as my girlfriend quickly found out, but for those of you who floss quite regularly, I had no problem moving to level 10 right away. One complaint that I have is that the water tank runs out too quickly, but it's really not that big of a deal to turn it off, remove the tank, and fill it back up with water. Takes about 10 seconds... no sweat. I have already convinced another friend of mine to buy this and he said that he loves his Waterpik too. In closing, I can honestly say that if I didn't have my lower retainer, I would have never bought this. I don't mind flossing one bit on my teeth that do not have the permanent retainer, but I could imagine that if you don't like flossing at all in the first place, this would be a great alternative to not flossing at all. So I recommend this product to two types of people in particular: 1. People with permanent retainers/other devices in their mouth that are difficult to floss around and through. 2. People who do not like to floss in the first place and are having a difficult time making it a regular part of their hygiene routine. *****UPDATE***** 05/13/2010: For a long time now, I've actually been using my Waterpik to blast the hairs out of the three, four, and five-blade shavers when hair gets stuck in them and the running water from my faucet doesn't do the trick. I haven't checked through other reviews to see if other people are doing this, but the Waterpik is worth it for this function alone. If you're tired of having hairs stuck in between the blades of your Mach 3, Quattro, or Fusion razors (or other manual razors), get this Waterpik and blast those hairs out (in addition to getting yourself an excellent device for keeping your mouth/gums clean). Please be aware that you'll get a little bit of splashing, but it's great because you can use those blade cartridges longer and get better results from them by having the hair cleared out of them. I can't believe that I didn't include this in my original review. Perhaps, I'll find another use for my Waterpik over time, but this is one of my favorite purchases EVER. I'll buy another when this one breaks. *****UPDATE***** 6/8/2011 About a month ago, I plugged this Waterpik in and it finally broke after 2.5 years. I already miss it (mostly for blasting water from between the blades of my Gillete Mach3, Fusion, and Schick Quattro razors. I plan to buy another Waterpik soon, and I still give it 5-stars despite breaking after a solid 2.5 years of regular usage.
Review: Very effective, include multiple tips and storage for them, has a large reservoir. - I purchased this same model 12 years ago, and used it twice a day. When I had my bathroom remodeled, I didn't want to give up the counter space, and gave it away. BIG MISTAKE!! My dental exams were good and I was using an electric toothbrush. So, what did I need a water flosser for?? At my latest dental exam, I was told I had large pockets behind my gums that were accumulating food and bacteria. They were large enough the hygienist got a tomato seed out of one of them. The hygienist recommended a WaterPik, and told me using one would eventually clean out and shrink the pockets. That night, I checked out desertcart to find a water flosser and found a portable, rechargeable one that had good reviews thinking it wouldn't take much counter space and would do the same job for a lot less money. Again, a big mistake. My first experience with this flosser would have won on America's Funniest Videos if it had been recorded. It had to be turned on to select a mode or speed and the selection buttons couldn't be seen when the tip was in my mouth. When I turned it on, it started shooting out a stream of water that covered the mirror and hit the ceiling before I could turn it off. The second time I used it, I had my thumb on the on button, put it in my mouth, pressed the on button, and almost drilled a hole in my tongue. In pain, I pulled it out of my mouth, sprayed my face and again washed my bathroom mirror before I could turn it off. When I finally got it under control, I had to refill the water reservoir 2-3 times to do a good cleaning. After all this, I decided to buy this WaterPik water flosser, and I love it. - The water reservoir is plenty large to hold enough water to do a good cleaning even when using a couple of the tips, - It includes 5 tips and 1 brush. I still use my electric toothbrush so I don't use the toothbrush that came with this set - All of the tips and the brush are stored in the cover for the water reservoir. - The water pressure can be adjusted before or after the unit is turned on. There is a separate "on" button on the hand tool to turn on the water jets. Turning it on and off while in your mouth is easy. - The hose to the tips coils and easily stores on the base unit. The tips included with this flosser are: 1 - Orthodontic Tip for Braces and General use 2 - Pik Pocket Tip for Periodontal pockets/Furcation - If you have pockets behind your gums, as I do, this tip works well to clean out and reduce the size of the pockets 3 - Plaque Seeker Tip helps to reduce plaque on implants, crowns, bridged, retainers and for general use 4 - Toothbrush Tip is for general use - Since I have an electric toothbrush, I have not yet tried this tip. 5 - Classic Jet Tip is for general use - This is the tip I most often use 6 - Tongue Cleaner helps to freshen breath - I haven't tried this tip yet, but, supposedly, cleaning your tongue helps to freshen your breath as it removes dead skin cells from your tongue. I have not yet tried all of the tips and most often use the Classic Jet tip to floss between my teeth - front and back. I have also been using this tip to clean the pockets, but should probably use the Pik Pocket tip for this. I don't think anyone would use all of these different tips, but will choose the ones that work best for their dental requirements. If you need a compact water flosser that you can travel with or store in a drawer, this one probably wouldn't work for you. If you have space on your bathroom counter and want a flosser that is easy to use, I highly recommend this water flosser. I am now using this flosser twice a day and hopefully, the pockets in my gums will be greatly reduced. I am 75 and, so far, have lost 2 of my chewing molars. I really don't want to lose any more. Chewing is important to healthy digestion, and I don't like any of the alternatives for the loss of teeth. I hope this review was helpful for you. I will update my review if my opinion changes.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: how do you get water supply?**
A: Seriously ... Any device that requires refilling with water — a Water Pik, clothes steamer, CPAP, etc. — it is best to use distilled water. A gallon jug runs about 80-90 cents at most superstores. $1.20/gal is at the boundary of price gouging.

**Q: Why this huge unattractive setup over a smaller cordless option?**
A: I have used both the cordless versions and this one, and much prefer this flosser over the cordless for a number of reason.
1- Cordless versions need to recharged often and can be charged a limited amount of times before the batteries wear out and are no longer useable. This one plugs in, so no battery problems.
2 - Cordless versions generally have 4 or so power modes for water pressure and speed. This unit has 10 modes to select from.
3 - Cordless versions have all controls on the handle you hold, i.e. pressure, speed, on/off. The unit has to be on to select pressure or speed. So, you have to make sure it is pointed at the sink to turn it on and select the mode. Although most will hold the selected mode when you turn it off, all controls are on the handle you hold to use it. Once it is in your mouth, you can't see the on/off button, and the mode changes if you accidentally touch a mode button on the handle while using it. With this WaterPik unit, the on/off button is on the main unit and so is pressure selection. The wand you hold when you use it, has an on/off slide button. So, you can turn on the base and set the pressure before you put the tip in your mouth and turn on the water when you are ready.
4 - Cordless versions have a very small water reservoir that usually has to be refilled more than once. The WaterPik has a tank large enough to do all you want to do with one fill.
5 - Cordless versions have a small opening to fill the reservoir with water. When you are done, there is no way to clean or dry it. The reservoir on the WaterPik is totally open so you can easily clean and dry it.

To sum it up, this flosser is easier to use, easier to clean, and will last much longer than a cordless version.

**Q: So does this replace floss completely?**
A: This definitely replaces flossing. It gets into places that can't be reached with floss and also does a good job on the gums to prevent pockets behind the gums. If you already have pockets, it will keep them clean and help to reduce them.

**Q: How much space does the base need by the sink to operate?**
A: The power cord and the water pik tube is long enough since you don't need to stretch it much further past the sink. You'll need to be over the sink to let all the water out of your mouth. The base itself is slightly wider than a large bottle of mouthwash.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Flossing With Braces Just Got Better!
*by M***X on August 9, 2011*

I purchased the Waterpik Ultra Water Flosser mostly because my son and I have braces and flossing has become a nightmare! I read the reviews and thought it was the most sensible alternative (but I admit I purchased it in disbelief). We received it promptly and I have to say it worked. I used it the first time and actually flossed afterwards to see if there was anything left that the Waterpik didn't get...and my teeth were "picked clean". There wasn't a hint of plaque anywhere. I was pleased with its performance and that it met and exceeded my expectations. I should also add that its very much a "plug and play" type machine. There is a little card to tell you how to start it for the first time and after that (which is super simple), it stays simple. No fussing. I do really like the coiled cord the "brush" is on...it slides in easily every single time, no messy wires. That said, there are a few things that I didn't like. 1) Be prepared for a mess! And a big one at that until you learn how to move your lips around the thing. I kept trying to close my mouth (natural reaction to water spraying everywhere) and also tried looking at what I was doing (normally, you look in the mirror when you brush, right?)...what a mistake. This sends water flying every which way. Be prepared to keep your head down close to the sink with your mouth half open with water running out of it (that makes a difference and it says to do this in the directions, but your natural instinct usually is the opposite of this). I have to confess that this is a little uncomfortable for me...but the upside is that you have "flossed" every crevice of your mouth (especially your braces) in a short amount of time. Also if you think your kids are going to pick this up without making an even bigger mess - be warned. My 12 year old son had even managed to inadvertently spray the bathroom window (across the room) and had water all over the counter, etc...everything was wet. Its taken time for him to get better with it, but its a slow process. 2) The directions say you can't use it for more than 5 minutes every 2 hours or it may burn out the motor. Keep in mind that it takes me two minutes to run through a cycle with the machine on its highest setting. But if you have purchased this for your family to use, you can't use it back to back between kids without risking damaging the waterpik altogether. 3) It doesn't whiten your teeth or remove stains. I have a sonicare toothbrush that removes the grit and stains from my teeth. The waterpik removes plaque and food particles. It doesn't really remove the gritty feeling from the back of your teeth that isn't close to the gum line...remember though, we only use the braces attachment and so maybe the other attachments work better. 4) I did try the tongue cleaner...it really seemed like a waste and then you have to change attachments. I know its not a lot of work to change attachments, its just a matter of convenience and ability. Its inconvenient to change the head and it really doesn't seem very useful. 5) I wouldn't recommend this for younger children. I have kids from age 3 up to twelve and I would think that my 10 year old would be okay with this, but not my 8 year old (a little uncoordinated anyway). I don't think it would hurt them, it would just be a mess and you cannot look in their mouth and do it for them like you might if you were trying to brush their teeth for them. Overall, the waterpik did what I wanted it to do - clean around our braces. I would still buy it in a heartbeat all over again because of how quick and efficient it is...but I'll only be using it while we have orthodontics. Hope this helps someone else who has the same troubles flossing as we did. *****UPDATE****** March 15, 2012 Just wanted to let you know that after all this time, we are still using our waterpik. It has served us well. No problems, easy to use...saves your sanity when it comes to flossing:)
