Native American Medicinal Plants: An Ethnobotanical Dictionary

Amazingly comprehensive
If you’re looking for a reference of medicinal plants of North America, nothing is more comprehensive. This is an academic reference book and does not delve into instructions for use, but is well indexed and easy to use.

Excellent reference material
Well organized book with fantastic information. One helpful way to use this book is to look up a particular plant and browse the history of its use, scanning for repeats. If multiple tribes used it similarly, to treat similar ailments, there's a good chance it actually does something--the more instances, the better that chance.I was intrigued to notice that many of the plants are imports from Europe, which the native tribes adopted after contact. I had expected all of the plants listed in this book to be native plants, but of course, that's not the purpose of this work. It's a thorough catalog of all the plants the tribes used, not just those attested prior to the sixteenth century.Excellent book for anyone wishing to reenact or document an American persona!

Not a beginner's book.
Not a beginner's level book for identifying plants. This does not contain pictures or photos for the majority of plants. Must know your plants first.

What a treasure!
This is the best compendium of American Indian plant usage I have ever encountered. It is even cross referenced. A definite keeper.

Great reference book
But we had thought it would have more info on what to use for what ailment. It does have a section in the back with ailments but then it just lists the herbs that could be used for that and doesn't give any "recipes" for mixtures that could help with certain ailments.

A+ for anthropology related info -- not many pics
Best ethnobotany book I own. Very few pictures (drawings) or identification info. Fantastic academic desk reference. Its like a plant dictionary. Highly recommended as a reference. Not intended to be a field manual, but rather an anthropological reference. Zero color photos.

Copy of author’s first book
I thought this book would be informative, but it’s essentially just a copy of Native American Ethnobotony by the same author. That was extremely disappointing to me, especially because of the high prices of these books. The book is informative if you don’t have Moerman’s other books.
