A Gem for Those Who Seek a Perfect Edge
The Naniwa Chosera #5000 is a high-quality sharpening stone. It produces a mirror finish on the edge of cutting tools and is especially recommended for knives made of high-carbon steel (above 0.8%) and with a hardness greater than 58 HRC. For steels with lower hardness, it’s difficult to achieve an optimal edge with this #5000 stone; in such cases, a #3000 grit stone is usually sufficient.Another point to consider is that this stone is softer than lower-grit Naniwa Chosera stones. Therefore, if you decide to separate it from the base, you must do so very carefully, as it chips easily. Even the adhesive used to attach it to the base often pulls fragments from the stone, since it doesn’t withstand mechanical stress well.It would be ideal if the manufacturer offered a base-free version of the Naniwa Chosera #5000 for those of us who prefer to sharpen using our own stone holders.

Great 5K Hone
Great 5K Hone. Check for the new binding material. Never soak in water . My stone appearance crackled. Be clear it doesn't effect how it performs. It just looks ugly. Cutting ability superior. For razors this is my mid-range hone. If it ever breaks apart, I will buy another. Solid repeatable hone. Pro Series for excellent results

They have a base.
I love Chosera stones. The "no base" in the description comes from the measurement of the stone, 25mm, without a base, "no base". These stones come with a base and are a deal. The new choseras are called Naniwa "Professional" stones. They cost a bunch more, are only 20mm thick and do not come with a base.

Very good stone
Both the 5000 and the 2000 have a similar feel, they are both a little sticky but since the 2000 is a lower grit it has a wonderful feedback. The 5000 on the other hand has a bit of a learning curve with the amount of applied pressure being the key to success. This stone also benefits from a slurry stone of the same grit or higher
