Not just a diet book
This book might well be called "Paleolithic lifestyle for the modern man". The basic idea of the book is that our bodies have been developed to live in the Stone Age. Then came agriculture and we've been downhill ever since. The authors try to adapt that Paleolithic lifestyle to today without being radical. They don't suggest you have to go eat snails, tough there are some intriguing suggestions. One of them is to give regular blood transfusions to "balance" our current lack of parasites and help regulate iron contents in the body!Diet is a very important part of the book but not all. In this new book they discuss supplements, cholesterol, how the gut works, sunbathing, exercise AND diet.If you buy the "Paleolithic Hypothesis", which they make a fine case defending, then this book is for you. If you just want to diet, their own "Protein Power" would be an easier reading, though there are a few revisions in the new book. The book is very well written and even funny sometimes. It's not a "reheated" version of "Protein Power" but a completely new book where the authors had a lot of latitude, even to defend some polemic ideas that would certainly not help sales. They claim, for instance, that cultivating grain is a form of drug trade.I would also recommend "The Ketogenic Diet" for people that want to know the physiology of this kind of diet.By the way, I've been on the diet for almost a year now. I lost 60 pounds and feel great

The Protein Power Life Plan Gram Counter is useful, but DO read the actual book
I bought the Gram Counter by accident. I meant to buy the actual book. That said .. if you haven't read Protein Power Life Plan yet, it's worth your while. My life changed due to this book many years ago. The authors, Drs. Eades, have a logical, factual and entertaining writing style. They explain everything in great detail and put science behind what they say. I tried reading the Atkins book, more than once, and just didn't get it. I understand the low-carb idea now and a whole lot more, such as the importance of fats and magnesium; the impact iron can have if you have too much .. there's no warning; how important gut health is and how to heal it. It's probably not what you think. This book is full of surprises and information that I've seen no where else, and I've read a lot of books on the subject of diet.

Outstanding Health Resource
This is an old book because the Drs. Eades were of the very first to recognize the black health-hole the American population were being led into by politically motivated nutritional guidelines. There is nothing more dangerous than pretend science and science-pretenders and we become their victims. The con job was so complete such that today the nutritional advice you would receive from most Doctors is in no way based upon verifiable science. This book presaged a revolt and should be read by anyone wishing to remain healthy into old age by avoiding the numerous depredations of diet-caused metabolic syndrome which include obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson s, auto-immune disease, it goes on and on. There is now a flurry of books telling us how to eat in order to remain healthy by turning back the diet industry clock; some carefully document how the metabolic disaster was brought about. A most recent one well-worth reading is "Death by Food Pyramid".

The best book of the many 'similar approaches'
I really enjoyed this book. I've read half a dozen others that discuss eating plans related to the 'low-carb' approach. This book is not a diet book. It's like having a couple of intelligent, research-oriented doctors with tons of experience sit down and explain things about nutrition and health to you in plain english. Each chapter addresses a slightly different topic, so that you are able to see how everything fits together, and why there is no one thing which, done in a vacuum or alone, is likely to be a good answer to better health. The Eades cover related areas that are very much needed, such as foods, drinks and drugs that work against low-carb eating plan weight-loss success (and why), and more. Reading other books, I felt like I'd read a good idea. Reading this book, I felt like I understood a whole facet of life on earth I hadn't before. And it was pretty enjoyable reading, as well. I highly recommend it.

How to complicate your life. Enter PPLP.
Too technical and scientific. I just wanted to get to a "simple" plan on how to implement the plan. Not workable for my life; or any average person who has a busy LIFE! While I like the idea of cutting back on carbs, starches, and sugars, the Eades' make this way too complicated. Back to Atkins, I guess.

The Protein Power Lifeplan: A New Comprehensive Blueprint for Optimal Health
Emerging information about what our ancient ancestors ate, and how long genetic evolution takes, and what a relatively short time agriculture has been around was surprising but the claims were amply supported by facts that can be checked. Even if I hadn't been convinced by the story of human evolution, I would have been by the program itself, and my results on it (2.5 years now). Can't argue with success. 3/31/13: I'm down 50 pounds and no longer insulin resistant.I've purchased many copies of this book and given them to struggling friends. My former primary doctor's dire predictions to the contrary, I am feeling great, and will remain on this program.Thank you Dr. Mary and Dr. Michael Eades. Bless you, you are the best.

The Protein Power Lifeplan...
I have a mountain of "Atkins" type diet books.THIS book by Dr's Eads IS my favorite. I alsopurchased their cookbook, another favorite ofmine. This book really explained WHY I needto eat more protein/good fats and goes intomore detail IF you choose to read that..if notthen you can just skip to the "meat" (sorry, could not let that one go by =)) of the bookand learn how and how much of what foods to eatdepending on your needs.I think this is a great book.

Great Low carb book.
A well laid out book covering all the points which you should consider before taking up a low carb diet. References to relevant studies are frequent and all the science of this lifestyle are explained. The authors then give a selection of levels at which to buy in to the diet dependant on whether you are simply looking for improved health, have major health issues already or are trying to lose excess weight.I found the writing style easily readable and the information well presented. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to study low carb eating, but wanting to know the reasons behind it.
