The shredded memory foam pillows arrive completely flat due to being tightly rolled up in transit. It takes about a week for the foam to expand naturally, perhaps longer. It has an odor because memory foam is a petroleum product. I had planned to try these memory foam pillows out and then use them for back rests if they were too stiff/hard.I have another pillow with gel and memory foam inside it and it is soft - I can easily press down the center of the pillow and it will allow my hand to depress about half way or deeper. These pillows are not like that at all.Having four shredded memory foam pillows now, I can attest that they will out-gas fumes as all memory foam products will because they are petroleum products as is clothing made from synthetic fabrics. Over time, the out-gassing will slow down & dissipate. You can check out the chemicals that out-gas from memory foam online. I didn't even think about this when I ordered them.The pillows are hard. Not like a brick but I cannot make a dent in it for my head without using the force of both my arms or punching it. Even then, the depression does not remain. I, too, have pain from neck issues so I wanted to find a pillow that would be more supportive. These definitely will support your head but may not feel comfy. My daughters saw the massively puffy pillows, pressed down on one and asked if I would get one for them to try. I did. I use these for excellent back support when sitting up in bed or watching television. I would not purchase them again for sleeping pillows.
