Photography: Night Sky: A Field Guide for Shooting after Dark - Kindle edition by Wu, Jennifer, Martin, James. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading Photography: Night Sky: A Field Guide for Shooting after Dark. Review: Fun, 'tactical' guide to night time photography - I purchased this book based on a recommendation from a website and was not disappointed. The book is well written and fun to read with just the right amount of reading and example pictures. The checklists are a helpful addition and something I will reference in the future. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to practice their skills at nighttime photography. This is geared more towards those who are comfortable shooting in M. Review: Absolute Beginer book - This book contains everything you need to take pictures like the one I took, I used low budget equipment and the result was amazing, Jennifer and James provide the Recipe for taking stunning pictures without having a degree or experience as a professional photographer, covers the most common settings for your camera in different scenarios it also provides ideas for post-processing edition to add more flavor to your pictures. The negatives reviews are pointless, don't downgrade a product just because you are not smart enough to follow simple steps or if you are a lazy reader, You must understand that this is a set of ideas/approaches for taking a picture with low light and unfavorable conditions, not all cameras, conditions, lighting, etc.. will be the same. Also if you own a professional camera or an entry-level camera you MUST know its features, settings, limitations, etc. Some reviews downgrade this book because they don't know how to use their camera, if you struggle with some terms... just google them(this applies to all hobbies, careers, etc) If you are a PRO and have already taken pics of the night sky then this is not for you (I mean you already know this...) if you are a rookie this book is for you.

For those interested in capturing the night sky and beyond
Great book for those just starting out in astro-photography, great tips on using the camera and getting familiar with taking pictures at different speeds, etc. Step-by-step instruction provided with reference to different objects you want to capture on film. Even if you are not planning on taking pictures of celestial objects, this book provides great insight to taking photos and really walks you through what most cameras are capable of, which is great for someone new to photography in general. Definitely a must have for those interested in taking pictures at night!

Well written and illustrated!
Great book and well written. The author has taken a somewhat complex subject and made it very easy to understand! Many great photos to show exactly what you are reading about.

Finally, a book that demystifies and simplifies DSLR photography of the night sky!
I am a novice photographer and have never taken any formal courses or training in photography. My interest in photography is as a hobby and as I am a physician I have limited free time so I needed a nuts and bolts guide to get me on the right track. Right out of the box I took this book and my camera gear on a long summer weekend to Beaufort, NC where on a clear night you may still see the Milky Way and wanted to take some long exposure night shots. I spent some time reading this book and dog-eared the pages I needed and once I was set up I was able to shoot manual bulb exposures using my DSLR that I would not have easily done fumbling around on the internet trying to find simple recipes for shooting particular night sky phenomena. I was able to shoot the Milky Way (looks way more impressive on an HD TV than I ever thought it would), star trails, and have since captured several long duration exposures of the International Space Station over my home in Raleigh. One I knew how to set the camera up the only thing I needed to know was what I wanted to shoot and when. Admittedly, these techniques are quite simple once you understand how to set-up the camera. The thing I lacked was a "guru" who could simply provide the "secrets" on how to take the shots. This book met my needs and as the title indicates, it is a field guide.

Brilliant Guide to Taking Incredible Time Exposures
Jennifer Wu is an amazing nature and landscape photographer, truly an artist. She has taken some of the most beautiful photographs of the night sky including the Milky Way galaxy, the aurora borealis, and the moon (go to her website and look at her portfolio). Now with this book she teaches how to take extraordinary nighttime landscapes with your DSLR, capturing the beauty of the night sky and revealing more majesty than our eyes can see! This book is detailed, and organized to answer all your questions, it provides important information about post processing using Photoshop and Lightroom working with the RAW files to achieve the highest quality. After reading this book, I went out on a perfectly clear night before dawn and took some of the most amazing photographs I ever have. This book has opened up a new world of photographic possibilities to me. If you have looked with awe at beautiful night landscape photographs such as those taken by Jennifer Wu and wondered exactly how to do it, wonder no longer, this book explains everything!

This is just the book you need if you want a practical, succinct guide to photographing the night sky in all its forms. Jennifer clearly sets out her methods and her reasons for doing so. It was my 'go to' guide when on a trip to the Matterhorn recently where I photographed the galactic core over this famous landmard-the book is neat enough to slip in to your luggage and it was an aide memoire for me whilst I was away.

I own and have read several books on night photography and astrophotography. This marvelous little book is one of my favorites. It is packed with useful practical information. It covers all aspects of night photography: planning, choice of gear, shooting parameters and techniques, composition, post-processing. The tips are clear, simple and work very well. The "theoretical" material is kept to a minimum, just the concepts one needs to know and use to capture the glorious night sky with the camera. And the book is generously and beatifully illustrated with gorgeous photographs, all of which with complete information about camera, lens, aperture, ISO and shutter speed. Be warned, this book is about night landscape photography. This is, the starry night sky (and Moon, auroras, meteors) as part of the composition. Nothing is said about photography of deep-sky objects with equatorial mounts.

This book is well written and does a great job of explaining not only how to photograph night images. It even has separate chapters on photographing star points, star trails moon shots, etc. Easy to understand and also explains why the authors are suggesting specific camera settings. Highly recommend. Jennifer Wu also has some excellent articles on the web about the same subject that you will fix with a quick search. However, this book compiles them all into one reference book.

I love this book. The author breaks down the process of shooting at night. It's easy to understand and has images with settings as examples.
