An Invaluable Varnish!
Consistently high quality, crystal clear clarity, durable protective coating that enhances the beauty of the subject. In addition, it dries quickly and there is never any yellowing or clouding. A little pricey, but a little goes a long way, making this varnish last!

Quality fixative
Windsor Newton makes high-quality art products. I purchased this to protect a pastel preliminary drawing that I did in preparation for an oil painting. Note that the pastel was darkened by the spray: the pastel is permanent however and I can go back and draw over the spray.

You can trust your oil painted canvas art with this spray
I did a lot of reading reviews on varnish before deciding on ordering this product. I really wanted the high gloss version but would have to wait at least a week before it shipped. I decided on the satin and it does work well. Make sure you look up directions prior to use online as the print on the can is so small it's illegible. Not much too it but it needs a really good shaking and make sure your art is dry before application. My first 2-3 layers did not give me any shine so I was a bit dissappointed that my oil paintings were not getting the brilliance I wanted from the varnish application. By layers 3 & 4, and I started to spray more heavily, I saw the sheen I was looking for. These were my very first paintings and I entrusted this spray to seal them. I'm happy with this product and would order again. Next time I will get the high gloss version and hopefully won't have to apply as many coats.

Easy to use
This varnish went on smoothly and left an attractive finish. It does have a slight odor, so use in a well ventilated area.

Great varnish for first-timers
I have been painting for a few years but recently decided to look into a varnish as I was making a painting as a gift and wanted it to be protected. There were so many options, but I opted for the spray rather than one you paint over your finished work, mostly because it seemed easier, quicker and less work. The directions say to lay your work flat and spray over it, but sometimes a few drops would fall from the can onto the painting leaving big droplets. Luckily I noticed before it fully dried. I would then spray my paintings while slanted against something, in this case, I used a cooler. The smell is VERY strong so I recommend spraying outside your house. I would spray my paintings in my yard and I would leave them there for a few minutes. The smell does linger on your paintings for a while, but it eventually goes away. I didn't want my paintings to be very shiny or very matte so I got the satin spray and I'm so glad I did. I feel like it enhanced my paintings while still leaving a natural look.

Always the best.
I use this on all my finished oil paintings. I wait 5-6 months then apply. Making sure the surface is completely dusk and partial free. Then I slowly, evenly, coat the painting. I let one coat dry for 48 hours, then decide on another coat. One is usually enough. This top coat varnish/glaze really brings out the depth of a painting. Very satisfied.

Best fixative out there
I mainly use it to spray sketches/printed pages before painting. It stops the lines from smudging and isn't so hydrophobic that you cant paint on top. It also doesn't wash color all over when you spray. There isnt something ive wanted to use it for and cant yet.

Turn a bright, shiny painting into a matte finish
I usually try to buy a "matte" finish to all my paintings. With framing they usually cost me around 300 to 350 dollars. But I found this beautiful painting of a cabin in the woods by a stream. The site did not say what kind of finish it had on it, but it was ridiculously less expensive. A 32 inch painting was only a little over 100 dollars, so I took a chance. When the painting came it I hung it over my computer where there is a lot of light coming from the kitchen lights. It looked pitiful. It was so shiny it looked like the cheapest imitation possible. Did some research on the web and found Amazon carries this spray called Winsor & Newton that can turn a bright, shiny picture into one that has a perfect matte finish. Sure enough, I followed the instructions on a Youtube video and it came out perfect. It turned it into a 300 dollar (easily) museum mounted picture. All you have to do is hold the can about 15 inches above the painting, and spray all the way down it, back and forth, covering the painting. Then you turn the painting 90 degrees and do that again. Then you let it sit for a couple hours to dry, and you have a matte finish that is to die for. Totally changes the picture. Too bad I had to buy a huge can because you use so little of it, but it was worth it to salvage a painting I otherwise would have got rid of. Highly recommended.

I probably sound like a newbie saying it (because I am so this was a lesson for me) but this severely REEKS worse than the crystal varnish I've been using for years. I used to get away with applying varnish in a well ventilated indoor area with an air purifier but this is NOT like that. Absolutely only to be used outdoors or in a garage with the door open.

Dries quickly, seems better quality than other similar products I’ve used. Leaves a nice matte finish.
